Weird Files

Has anyone noticed weirdly named files in their Turbo Tax folder.  Like this:  UT

or ·

No, I haven't seen that!  Please Clarify the situation.

  • Are you seeing it on the Desktop, or is this Online?
  • Do you continue to see it?
  • What areas is it appearing in?

@JohnB5677

I've noticed them 2 or 3 times in the past 2 months....last time was a couple weeks ago.

....but as I interface with both the Online and the desktop software...and the community daily, I haven't yet figured out which access causes that file to be generated.

My Windows OneDrive complains about it containing illegal characters in the file name.  I've deleted it each time it showed up with no effect on any of my files, at least none that I have seen.

Though, now that I think of it...that file popped up in my TurboTax directory that stores my Desktop files...so it must have something to do with the desktop software.

On Desktop[.

Files always there unless I delete because OneDrive is complaining about them.

Location is C:\Users\crsta\OneDrive\CRS Documents\Documents\TurboTax

That is location of saved PDF files of previous tax years.

And there is no affect to TT if I delete them as someone else remarked.

FYI Just ran TT and dates on files did not change.  I think the date on one file is same as last update 1/22/26 and other is same a previous update1/20/26.  I have entered new data and saved since last version update.

I have them too on Windows Home & Business.  I made a screenshot before when there were 2 of them.  Now I have 4 in my Documents - Turbo Tax folder with my .tax20yy files.

I have seen that.  This morning it is "`Ѹ".  The name is random, and onedrive flags it.  I found that you can safely delete them.  Mine are saved in Documents\TurboTax.  I had no other needed documents there, so if the same for you, you should be able to exclude from OneDrive Synch.
