W2

I don't have a W2. Just a 1099. I have been retired since 2018. My husband always did our taxes but he passed in Dec.

Very sorry for your loss.  For the year that your spouse died, you can still file a joint return.  That way, you will get the married filing jointly standard deduction of $29,200 (+ $1550 for each spouse 65 or older) which will lower the amount of income you are taxed on.

In My Info, you will need to indicate that your spouse died. When his name is in My Info,  there is a screen early in the interview that asks "Do any of these apply to [name] ?’” where you will do that, and then a drop down will appear where you can enter the date he passed.

You can skip entering W-2's if you do not have one.   There are a lot of different kinds of 1099's.  If you can tell us what kind you have, we can tell you where to enter it.

Since you only have a 1099, you are likely considered self-employed or an independent contractor. Here’s how you can proceed with TurboTax:

Filing Status

  • 2024 Tax Year: If your spouse passed in 2024You can still file jointly for 2024.
  • 2025 and Beyond: You can file as Single or Qualifying Widow(er) if you meet the requirements. Learn more about Qualifying Widow(er) status.

Using TurboTax Self-Employed

Since you have 1099 income, you  may need TurboTax Self-Employed, which will guide you step-by-step through self-employment income, deductions, and credits. Here are the links to get started:
