W-2G Form bug

While on Form W-2F, For Box 13, there is no Nevada in the menu.  I called support and was informed to leave it blank because NV has no state tax.  Great!

Now SmartCheck fails.  Oddly, the menu presented by SmartCheck DOES have Nevada listed.

This appears to be a bug.  The Form and SmartCheck entries for State are entirely different, with SmartCheck presenting all 50 states.

If your Form W-2G has nothing shown for the state ID number, no state winnings, and no state tax withheld (such as for Nevada), then don't choose anything from the drop-down list of state names and leave the other state fields blank. This should resolve the error. The instructions for Boxes 13-18 indicate "Leave blank if empty on your form". Don't enter zeros if the fields are blank.

Box 13 on Form W-2G is for the State payer ID number. TurboTax also provides a drop-down menu to choose the name of the state, which is actually not shown in box 13, but only in the payer address field.

If you live in a state with income tax, you only need a payer ID number if there was state withholding entered for that state. If not, don't select your state from the drop-down menu and leave the other state boxes blank.

If you entered something in the state section of your W-2G and it's coming up as an error in Review, try deleting the W-2G (click the trash can icon next to the item) and entering it again.

See this TurboTax tips article for more information on Form W-2G.

I guess my problem is the inconsistency.

Box 13 value from the Casinos is “NV 5555555”, for example.  After calling, I was told to leave it blank, which I did, because NV does not collect tax.

But the SmartCheck rejects it being blank.  It then gives the option to select Nevada from a menu.

I think either the form needs to be fixed, or SmartCheck needs to be fixed.  They contradict each other.

I totally agree with you.  I have a bunch of W-2Gs from Station Casinos in Nevada and they all contain amounts in the state winnings and local winnings boxes; however, they do not report a state/payer ID or number.  And because there are no taxes in Nevada, the boxes for state and local taxes withheld are naturally zero.  In order to preserve the exact data they provided on the forms, I had to enter the federal ID in the state box, and then go to Smart Check to enter "NV" for Nevada, as I was unable to enter it on the W-2G screen.  I live in IL and find this to be a complete pain.  It's mostly a result of the way Station Casinos creates their W-2Gs, but also, it's really a flaw within TT.  I happen to be using 2023 TT Deluxe for Windows.

You can ignore the state and local information if there is no state or local withholdings as MonikaK1 says.
