Two States and DC

I am a resident of PA until June and moved to Arlington VA for another job which also has ties to DC.  How are my taxes distributed??

Welcome to VA!

VA has reciprocity with DC so DC may be a non issue depending your situation, check here to start

DC aside, you would need to file part year state returns for PA and VA and during that process TT will ask you to assign your Federal income to either state, usually that's just done by where you were resident when that income was earned, if you have a W2 for the job in PA and W2 for the job in VA then that is easy to assign, for other 1099 investment income you have to figure out the split and input to the state programs.  The part year state returns figure out how to annualize/pro-rata your state deductions etc.

TT did not ask where to assign federal money.  Did receive a W2 from both PA and VA with it being about 60-40% with working

at the start of state taxes for VA you should get a question if you were a part-year resident then you give your dates of residency.  then go thru the income page (most of which probably doesn't apply), click "done with income" and you'll get a page "How Virginia Handles Income for Part-Year Residents" and continue thru that.  Not sure about PA but presumably similar.760PY.png

So assume PA will ask same question at beginning of states
