I have determined that the NAICS code "339910 Jewelry and Silverware Manufacturing" is the best fit for my business, but when I search for it in TurboTax Home & Business, I get "We did not find a code for 339910".
Jewelry and Silverware Manufacturing is part of: NAICS 339900 - Other Miscellaneous Manufacturing.
Use 339900 - Other miscellaneous manufacturing
TurboTax is asking for your Principal Business Activity Code, which is not the same as the NAICS code. Please follow this link for a list of principal business activity code
TurboTaxRichardG, thanks for the link. At the very top of the page, it states, "These Principal Business Activity Codes are based on the North American Industry Classification System." It appears that there is a lot of overlap between the principal business activity codes and the NAICS, but not all of the NAICS codes can be used here.
I am unable to find a code that matches my business very well. I am a solopreneur and I make handcrafted jewelry in my home. I sell my pieces to local and online clients. Because I do both wholesale and retail, the codes under Wholesale Trade don't apply. I don't have a store, so the codes under Retail Trade don't apply. Where to go next? I've read blog and forum posts indicating that 711510 "Independent artists, writers, & performers" is the best fit, but it still doesn't sound exactly right to me.
I am having the exact same issue did you ever get it figured out
I don't think you have to be too concerned about the code. It is used for Federal statistical agencies to classify business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and publishing statistical data related to the U.S. business economy.
There is no tax consequence to the code.
