TurboTax 2024 Install/activation technical issue

I purchased 2024 TurboTax Premier from Costco.  I Selected to download the Windows version and I downloaded the application an initiated the installation and it gave me a message it successfully installed on my Windows 10 Pro computer where I have always installed previous TurboTax versions.  I then restarted my computer and the double-clicked on the 2024 TurboTax Icon on my desktop to start the program so I could enter the license code, etc.  However, when I double click on the 2024 TurboTax icon it seems to start and it fleshed the typical TurboTax window on my display buy it immediately disappears and never starts up and never gives me any error messages or any sort of indication of a problem.  I have tried this whole process 5-6 times and each time the result is the same.  Is anyone else experiencing this issue and have a remedy to resolve this?  There seems to be no way to contact a real technical support person at Intuit to assist.  Appreciate any/all assistance

Here's an article on Troubleshooting TurboTax Desktop Issues that may help you.

If you can't get the product you purchased to work, you can request a refund and get a download from Intuit.

You can talk to a person at Contact TurboTax Support

I checked out the troubleshooting guide and the step to add https:*.intuit.com to trusted sites does not work as there is a syntax error of some sort.  Is there an update for that syntax to allow the correct site?

I tried all the other steps but I still get the same results.

I also saw where some other people seemed to have same issue but on Windows 11 Pro where they had to create a new account and then install Turbotax 2024 - is that needed on Windows 10 Pro as well, and if so, what are the steps needed to create a new account?

I am going to suggest these steps below. I think you might be having an issue other users have experienced with installing when using Windows 10.

  1. Type "environment" in the windows search bar.
  2. This will bring up "Edit the System Environment Variables" as a match.
  3. Clicking on it takes you to the "Advanced" tab of a dialog box titled "System Properties."
  4. Near the bottom of the dialog box, click on the pushbutton labeled "Environment Variables...".
  5. This brings up a separate dialog box that shows the current values for user environment variables at the top and system variables at the bottom. In the list of user environment variables, you should see both TEMP and TMP, and their current values.
  6. Click on each, then click on the "Edit..." pushbutton.
  7. This brings up another dialog box in which you can change the "Variable value" to "C:\Temp" (be sure to change the variable value, not the variable name).
  8. This folder must, of course, exist for this step to work properly.
  9. OK out of all the dialog boxes and retry the install.
  10. Environment variable changes take effect immediately, so if this is the only change you make, it's not necessary to reboot.

Thank you for providing those steps.

I performed those steps as indicated and altered the TEMP & TMP user environment variables from "C:\Users\Jeffa\AppData\Local\Temp" to "C:\Temp".  I did NOT alter the System TEMP or TMP environment variables.

I did NOT have a C:|Temp folder so I created that folder and it was created with whatever default folder permissions currently exist for my computer, so if there are special folder permissions that are necessary I would need to know those.

After performing those changes , I did NOT reboot my computer, and I did NOT uninstall and reinstall the TurboTax application.  I simply double clicked on the TurboTax 2024 icon on my desktop and the same result happened where the TurboTax Window briefly pops up on the center of my screen and then quickly disappears, which is the same issue I started with.

Does anyone have any further instructions or additions to the above recommendations?

It would be nice if Intuit still had a technical support line where you could speak with a human on the specific issue I am experiencing, but unfortunately it seems that option is no longer supported and the customer service is not what it used to be.

Thanks in advance for any/all assistance.

The issues I am experiencing are all described in posts from me above and in the original posting that initiated this thread - any help appreciated

To summarize the issue I am experiencing trying to install/activate my TurboTax 2024 Premier that I purchased from Costco, here is what I am seeing/doing:

I Selected to download the Windows version from InstallTurboTax.com and I downloaded the application and initiated the installation and it gave me a message it successfully installed on my Windows 10 Pro computer where I have always installed previous TurboTax versions.  I then restarted my computer and the double-clicked on the 2024 TurboTax Icon on my desktop to start the program so I could enter the license code, etc.  However, when I double click on the 2024 TurboTax icon it seems to start and it flashed the typical TurboTax window on my display buy it immediately disappears and never starts up and never gives me any error messages or any sort of indication of a problem.  There have been several suggested procedures to try in this thread which I have done, with the exception of creating a new account suggested by some folks using Windows 11 experiencing this same issue, nor have I tried what was suggested by VolvoGirl for switching out of "S" Mode.  It appears switching out of S Mode is a one-way process, and once you switch out you cannot go back to S Mode.  Does that pose other issues?

I have tried this whole process 5-6 times and each time the result is the same.  Is anyone else experiencing this issue and have a remedy to resolve this? Very frustrating!

@JeffS57   If you are in S mode you would not be able to even download or install the program in the first place.  Windows 10 Pro would not be in S mode.  That's only for the Windows 10 home versions.

I'm having the exact same problem. All prior versions of TTX still work. All prior versions utilized a disc purchased from Costco. This new download option is a mess.

Exactly, same here.  All my previous versions of Turbotax are all still installed on my computer and work just fine, and each of those were installed via a disk I bought at Costco.  Intuit really messed this up this year!

Thank you for the link to a phone number where I could speak with someone.

I called and spoke with a technical advisor who was very helpful.  Unfortunately, they do not have a solution and he consulted with other tech's while we were on the line and no one seems to know what causes this issue.  But he did say plenty of others seem to be having the same issue.  He said the one other person that he helped on this issue was able to resolve it by installing it on a different computer, but that's not an opyion that I have.  He said the best advice he could provide is to purchase an install disc for $10 and he thinks that should work and he provided me the link to purchase the disc.  The link for that purchase disc is as follows for anyone else that may need to do this:

https://turbotax.intuit.com/lp/ttd/4021/

I filled out the data needed and am purchasing the disc, so will see how that works out once I receive the disc in a few weeks.  The tech indicated that if that does not work out then I should call back and they should be able to refund the $10 disc purchase amount.

Frustrating, but hopefully works in the end and hopefully Intuit can figure this issue out internally.

I'm having exactly the same issue as you, Jeff.  I'm surprised that Intuit doesn't send you a disk for free as it is their problem to solve.  I'll be calling them in the morning.

I’ve resolved my install activation problem.
after many different approaches, this finally worked. No thanks to the TurboTax developers. This was a pain to figure out.

load the TurboTax software.

go here and do a manual update.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/update-products/manually-update-turbotax-windows-software-basic/L3Wf9OPaf_US_en_US?uid=m4osn2g1

after the update completes, go here and update C++.  Try updating all three files for the latest, 2022, versions.

The address should be https://*.intuit.com and not https:*.intuit.com for it to be accepted in the Control Panel Internet permissions.

Thanks CoolWhipl!!!  This worked for me also.  I had a version of C++ from Visual Studio that was updated in 10/2024 but it didn't work.  Once I installed the latest version of C++ and installed the TurboTax update, I was able to get TurboTax to the registration prompt and complete registration.  Thanks again.

Thank you so much for your posted solution! It worked for me, also. Doing the update of TurboTax was not enough by itself, but after I updated the C++ versions for both x86 and 64-bit, TurboTax worked as expected.
