Review your responses in the IL Property Tax Credit section.

  • Note: You cannot claim the property tax credit if your federal adjusted gross income exceeds $500,000 if filing a joint return, or $250,000 for all other returns.

Thanks for your quick response.  My adjusted gross income is below the limit.  I have been using Turbotax for a long time and had no problem with property tax credit before.  After answering yes to the questions and entering County Name and PIN, when I go the next screen, it states "your Illinois Property Tax Credit is $0.00

This is not a known TurboTax issue. I have tried both the online version and CD\Download version of TurboTax and used various scenarios. The calculations worked. If you have the CD\Download version, make sure you have the latest update.

Reviewing the screens:

You wrote, "  After answering yes to the questions and entering County Name and PIN, when I go the next screen, it states "your Illinois Property Tax Credit is $0.00".

My next screen is the Property taxes screen. These I left blank.

  1. Property taxes NOT on residence
  2. Property taxes deductible elsewhere.

My next screen is the Your property tax credit screen where it shows the property tax credit.

If all else fails, clear your cookies, cache, and reboot your computer. If you have the CD\Download version, delete the state of IL and reinstall it.

Hello HelenC12.  I am having the same exact problem with the State of Illinois Property Tax Credit on Turbotax online.  Filing jointly well below the income limits, here is my progression through the IL state tax screens on Turbotax:

Screen 1:  Credit for Property Taxes

Answered "yes" to all 4 questions

Screen 2:  Property Information

My county and Personal Primary Residence PIN number are entered accurately

Screen 3:  Property Taxes

Both fields are blank (also tried zeroes in both fields, with same result)

Screen 4: Your Property Tax Credit

"Your property tax credit is $0.00"

I cleared all browser history, cookies and cache, and restarted my computer.  Turbotax is still telling me I have zero property tax credit.  The Illinois Schedule ICR prepared by Turbotax has worked fine for me the past 7 years, but not this year.  Something is wrong.

Please advise.

Thanks for your help.

Never mind, I figured it out.  In my case, there is no software issue.  Retirement income is not subject to Illinois state tax, so my remaining income fell below the Illinois exemption allowance.  Therefore, I owe zero income taxes in Illinois, and you cannot claim a property tax credit on zero taxes.

I am experiencing the same issue. My AGI is below the limit. I've also been using Turbo tax for a long time and there was no issue in the past, with obtaining my property tax credit.  As with yourself, after answering yes to the questions and entering the county name and PIN, I also get the response "your Illinois Property Tax Credit is 0."

Could someone on the Turbo tech support respond on when the is resolved?

Thank you!

Take a look at your Illinois tax return to be sure that you have a state tax liability.  If you do not owe any taxes to the state, then you cannot receive an Illinois Property Tax Credit because the credit is non-refundable.

If the income tax amount shown on line 14 of Form IL-1040 is zero, then you will not be eligible to claim the property tax credit because you do not have a state tax liability.

If you are using a CD/downloaded version of TurboTax, click the Forms button on the upper right corner of the screen.  Then select the Illinois Form IL-1040 on the left side of the screen so you can look at line 14.

If you are using TurboTax Online, while you are in the Illinois return click Tax Tools on the left side of the screen.  Then click Tools, then View Tax Summary.  This will show you a summary of your Illinois return.  If the Illinois income tax line shows a zero, then you will not be eligible for the property tax credit.
