Technical Help Needed

I do my parents taxes using Turbotax Delux. Both the federal and state returns were rejected because it said my father PIN didn't match the 2019 PIN. What I discovered is the turbotax delux system is entering on it's own a coma and period within the PIN. I have tried numerous times to correct this with no success. Please help me correct this.

I have not experienced this issue, but here is a suggestion that might help you.

Open up Turbo Tax 2019 and then open your parents tax file that was filed.

Go the the review section and step through until you find the PIN that was entered.

Normally turbo tax imports this, but since you mentioned there were commas or periods in the PIN, it sounds like maybe some data corruption in the file.

Good luck.

If you can't file due to the PIN it's still easy to verify your identity and file your taxes online. Here are your options:

  1. Use a Self-Selected or Previously Issued PIN: If you've used a self-selected PIN in previous years, you can use the same PIN to file your taxes electronically for the 2020 tax year—in essence, you'll notice no difference. Or, if you've been issued an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN), you can use that to file your taxes online.
  2. Use Your 2019 Tax Return: You can also file your taxes online using your adjusted gross income (AGI) from last year's tax return to verify your identity. If you filed your taxes with TurboTax last year, you can access last year's tax filing to find your AGI. Look on Line 8b of the 2019 Form 1040.

The IRS requires your 2019 AGI to verify your identity for e-filing. If you're paper-filing your return, you won't need your AGI because those are manually processed.

Here are a few places you can get your 2019 AGI:

  • If you filed your 2019 taxes with TurboTax, sign in and go down to Your tax returns & documents. Select View adjusted gross income (AGI).
  • If you didn’t file your taxes with TurboTax in 2019, the best place to get last year's AGI is from the 1040 form you filed with the IRS. Look on line 8b. If you filed a 1040NR, it'll be on line 35.
  • If you're having trouble locating your 2019 return, the second-best place to get your AGI is from the IRS. You can order a free transcript of your return at the IRS Get Transcript site or you can purchase a full copy of your 2019 return. Both versions will include your AGI.

If you didn't file a 2019 federal tax return (or you haven't filed one yet), enter 0 as your AGI.

The PIN number are correct and identical to the 2019 PIN. My problem is that the Turbotax Delux system is entering a coma and a period when I click on continue. What can I do to correct this? It is a system problem.
