Tax return for recently released convict.

I am helping a man released from prison in 2024 after 20 years in prison. No tax return for that period. Any guidance will help.

If they did not receive any type of taxable income in 2024 then there is no reason or need for them to file a 2024 tax return.

If there was no income during those times, there was no filing requirement.  If there was income in 2024, a return may need to be filed.

See this IRS link: Here’s who needs to file a tax return in 2024

Do I need to do a paper return? When I use online software they ask for last year's (2023) AGI to verify the tax filer. He has 2024 earned income, but none prior to that.

Where asked for a 2023 AGI enter a 0 (zero) since they did not file a 2023 federal tax return.
