Do I need to refile if I put the wrong amount of HSA disbursement on my tax return? Thank you for helping.

Yes, if the amount you entered for your 1099-SA distribution is wrong, and is less than the actual amount, you should amend your return and correct it.

Here's how to do that:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax.
  2. On the home screen, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and select 2023.
  3. Select Amend (change) return, then Amend using TurboTax Online.
  4. Carefully follow the directions to start your amendment.
  5. Your refund will go to zero, don't worry, that's normal.
  6. On the screen OK, let's get a kickstart on your amended return, select the reason(s) you're amending, and Continue.
  7. When you reach Here's the info for your amended federal return, select Start next to Wages & Income.
  8. Select Edit to the right of 1099-SA, HSA, MSA.
  9. Select Edit, then Continue until you get to Here's what we have so far.
  10. Select Edit to the right of your 1099-SA entry.
  11. Answer the questions until you get back to Here's what we have so far.
  12. Select Done.
  13. Select Review, then Check my return.
  14. Provide the explanation for your changes.
  15. Keep going until you e-file your amended return, or print it for mailing.
