state residency

I moved to a new state in mid 2020 and established residency only for about 110 days, then moved back to the previous state. How do I document this move? I had state taxes taken out (even though I still worked in the previous state which was Texas and has no state income tax) for a few months, but at the beginning and end of the year I was still a resident of Texas.

I bought a house in the new state when I moved there, that I have now converted to a rental (but no rental income until early 2021).

When you say you established residency for about 110 days, what steps did you take to sever your residency status with Texas and more closely establish ties with the new state?

It is possible, even likely, that you never actual gave up your residency with Texas due to your brief absence and return.

You can file as a nonresident of the second state and claim the income and taxes withheld as a nonresident taxpayer.
