spouse passing

my spouse passed away in 2020 and when I filed that years taxes I was able to file qualified widow. When 2021 came to file I was told I could not file QW ... was that incorrect?

For the year following the death of your spouse you were allowed to file as a qualifying widow IF you still had a qualified child dependent.   If you did not have a child dependent then you should have filed  as Single.
