Slow "support" from TurboTax

I have a new iMac, latest OS, desktop version of TurboTax 2025 (just purchased at Costco) doesn't load on it.

I have tried multiple times.

I have used TurboTax in the past and have not had problems.

I am on hold with TurboTax toll-free for > a half-hour.

You buy your troubles. I wish I hadn't bought TurboTax.

The main reason is that you may have a missing background component called Rosetta 2. Even though you have a powerful new Mac, TurboTax is still built using "Intel" code. To run it, your Mac needs Rosetta 2 to "translate" that code. Usually, macOS asks to install this automatically, but on new systems, the prompt sometimes fails to appear, leaving the app "stuck" or unable to open.

Check to see if Rosetta 2 is in your applications folder.

  • Open the TurboTax installer window.
  • Drag the TurboTax icon into your Applications folder.
  • Close the installer window and remove the TurboTax disk icon from your desktop.
  • Open your Applications folder and double-click the TurboTax app from there.

If you find it isn't listed in your applications folder, perform these steps.

  • Open Terminal (Press Command + Space, type "Terminal," and hit Enter).
  • Copy and paste the following command exactly: softwareupdate --install-rosetta
  • Press Enter.
  • Type A to agree to the license agreement and press Enter.
  • Once it says the installation was successful, try opening TurboTax again.

Newer versions of macOS (like Sequoia) have strict security settings that can prevent software purchased from third parties like Costco.

  • Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security in your computer.
  • Scroll down to the Security section.
  • If you see a message saying "TurboTax was blocked from use because it is not from an identified developer," click Open Anyway.

Also check to see if the software you purchased from Costco ‌will install on the MAC.  Check the labels.
