could I have filed HOH? I am single, can not claim any dependents but I pay for everything in the household on my own

Head of Household does not just mean you make the majority of payments to maintain your home. You must have a qualifying person as a dependent to be eligible for HOH filing status.

No, you need a qualifying person on your return in order to use the Head of Household filing status. Generally, the qualifying person is a dependent.
