Schedule A Software issue

I completed Schedule A but it doesn't print.  It Aldo doesn't appear in list of forms in the return.  IRS will bounce this return unless the form is present.   Typically it is impossible to get a human response.

In TurboTax Desktop, open FORMS, then choose 'Open Form' at the upper left.  Type in Schedule A on the pop-up and choose 'Create Form'.  This may create the form for you and populate with the entries you made in the program.

 

Another thing to try:

 

  1. Open your return and select Federal Taxes
  2. Select Deductions & Credits
  3. When asked how you want to enter your deductions and credits, select I'll choose what I work on
  4. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the Your 2022 Deductions & Credits screen and select Done with Deductions
  5. Continue until you see The Standard [or Itemized] Deduction is Right for You!
  6. Select Change my deduction and choose which one you'd like
  7. Select Continue to apply any changes

The first suggestion, using Open Form, worked in producing the missing Schedule A.  However,  Schedule A still doesn't appear in the adjacent Forms in My Return.  How do I get this into the return?  Do I need to print to PDF, then import to PDFs of the return?  That might work but will not be helpful next year.

If Schedule A is not included in your tax return, it's because you are using the standard deduction, not itemized deductions. Compare Schedule A line 17 to Form 1040 line 12.


If you have further questions, please say whether you are using TurboTax Online or the CD/Download TurboTax software.

I'm MFS for 2 returns , using the same program.  In one return Schedule A is present, in the other Schedule A is not (although the data are).  On the 1040, the Schedule A deduction appears in place of the standard deduction.

You didn't answer my question about whether you are using TurboTax Online or the CD/Download TurboTax software. I'm not sure what you mean by "using the same program." Since you are preparing two tax returns, I hope you are using the CD/Download software. If you are using TurboTax Online you cannot prepare two returns with the same account. You have to use two separate accounts.


Please keep in mind that we cannot see your tax returns or your screen. We don't know anything about you or your tax returns except what you write in your posts. Things that seem obvious to you may not be obvious to someone who has only a couple of brief messages to look at. When you say "on the 1040," it's not clear which 1040 you are talking about, since you are working on two separate tax returns.


As you are probably aware, when you file as married filing separately (MFS), if one of you uses itemized deductions the other must also use itemized deductions. You can't itemize on one return and use the standard deduction on the other return. In the Personal Info section of TurboTax for both returns, make sure you check the box that says either your spouse or you claim itemized deductions. See if checking that box resolves your Schedule A problem.

I am using the download version for both returns.  Both returns are MFS, each has itemized deductions, each has MFS filing status.  One return went like clockwork for the deductions.  For the problem return, I entered the data piecemeal (on my choosing, as info was forwarded).  When I was in forms view, I noticed there was no tab for Schedule A although there tabs for charitable deductions, medical, taxes paid, etc.

Yes, it sounds like on the "problem return" you did not check the box indicating the other spouse itemized.

 

To correct that:

 

  1. Open the return.
  2. Click on Personal Info.
  3. Click Continue.
  4. Click Edit to the right of the spouse's name.
  5. Click Continue.
  6. On the screen Select Any That Apply, select the first checkbox, Either (name) or I claimed itemized deductions.
  7. You should get the message shown below.
  8. Click Continue.

This has been helpful.  I've checked everyplace that asks about filing status.  All are MFS EXCEPT the 1040 which has MFJ marked.  How do  I change this?

I was wrong in my last post.  On the 1040 form, I do have an X in the MFS box.  The form layout made it looked like I checked the wrong box.  So I'm back to square 1.  I'm considering installing the program on another computer and starting over.  Any better suggestions?

Thank you Marilyn.  The second suggestion worked.  Schedule A appears in the Forms in My Return.  I assume it will remain there.
