Retirement Contribution Deluxe upgrade

In order to claim a $35 retirement contribution credit that does not increase or decrease my refund at all, I have to pay $60 for the upgrade to TurboTax Deluxe? So basically I'm paying more to lower my return. Is there no way to file for free when this credit doesn't impact your return?

Why do you want to take it off?

Unless the credit is less than the upgrade?

Two options:

1) You might be able to use the Free File Edition for incomes under $36,000 and supports all states and most forms.

And get the credit.

The Free File Edition is part of the IRS Free File alliance and is totally separate from TurboTax website. The IRS Free File should not be confused with the TurboTax Free Edition that only supports simple tax returns.

How do I switch to TurboTax Free File?

2) In the "savers credit" interview answer "yes" you are a student. The answer does not go on the tax return or affect anything else, it simply "fools" TurboTax to remove the credit.

Thanks, I'll try that. The credit is $35. The cost of Deluxe is $60. My refund amount remains the same with or without the credit, so it doesn't make sense to pay $60 out of my refund to apply a credit that doesn't increase my refund. I get X amount with the free version and I get X amount minus $60 to upgrade, if that makes sense. I am a student, but I didn't start classes until spring semester.
