There is no phone support for free unless you upgrade to PLUS.

You can ask your question here, but do not post any personal information to this public forum.

If you are using a paid version or have added Plus then:

There is no single published number because it changes contently depending on the nature of the call and agent availability. Following the link below will either give a current number for you to call or take your number for a callback.

Here is a TurboTax FAQ for contacting customer support.

I processed a tax return on 3/6/21 and it was accepted by the IRS.  The return has disappeared out of TT on my desktop and is no where to be found on my hard drive, etc.  The IRS is stating that the return is not filed now?  I need to find this file.

If you used desktop TurboTax  (CD/download) search your entire system for any data file ending in *.tax2020 and also check the Recycle Bin.   Also check any external drive you might have saved the file to such as a thumb drive.

"The IRS is stating that the return is not filed now?"

Did you speak to a live agent at the IRS, or are you referring to the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool?  That WMR tool has at times been quirky this year, and it's not uncommon for that tool to say that no info was found.  I'll tell you how to phone the IRS at the bottom of this post, but it won't be easy.

Here are some tips when using the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool:

https://www.irs.gov/Refunds

  • Be sure you have waited at least 24 hours after acceptance before using the IRS WMR tool.
  • Be sure you enter the correct SSN and filing status.
  • Be sure you are using only the Federal refund amount.   Do not include any state refund or any total refund or net refund (Fed and State) that TurboTax may have provided on a screen.
  • Also be sure you are using the Federal amount before any TurboTax fees are taken out (if you chose that option.)
  • Look at your actual Federal return to get the Federal refund amount, i.e., your Form 1040, Line 35a.
  • You can also try phoning the IRS refund hotline.  I've seen it work for some users when the WMR tool didn't.  800-829-1954

If you still can't find the *.tax2020 data file after searching the complete system and Recycle Bin, here's how to reach Customer Support by phone:

Hours are 5AM-9PM Pacific (8AM-12 Midnight Eastern) 7 days/week.

You can use this contact form to get a phone number.

Here's how to "normally" reach a live agent at the IRS, although it may be difficult due to pandemic-related staff shortages, busy tax season, increased duties from stimulus payments, etc.

IRS:  800-829-1040 (7AM-7 PM local time) Monday-Friday

When calling the IRS do not choose the first choice re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.

  • First choose your language.  Then listen to each menu before making the selection.
  • Then press 2 for "personal income tax".
  • Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
  • Then press 3 "for all other questions."
  • Then press 2 "for all other questions."
  • It may then ask for your SSN, but do not enter it.  Just wait.    If it asks for SSN a second time, still do not enter it.
  • Then it will get "tired", and you'll get another menu.  Choose 2 for "personal".
  • Then in the next menu choose 4 for "all other inquiries", and it should transfer you to an agent but expect a long wait.
  • I usually use a speakerphone so I can work on something else while waiting.
