NOL carryforward - carryforward every year or no

I have an older NOL that I carried forward to last year, but it's not clear if I need to carry it forward every year (and thus it builds or shrinks), or just leave it and carry it forward to one specific year?

An NOL will carry forward until it is used up. The program should carry it, if there is any to carry. Please see the information in this link for the complicated calculation for the NOL.
