New requirement for 64-bit computer to run 2023

Is there any kind of workaround to get TurboTax 2023 to work on a 32-bit computer or do I have to purchase a new computer just to run TurboTax? I've been using it for over 20 years and this is a real surprise.

You need Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11 (64-bit) neither of which, as far as I know, can run on a computer with a 32-bit processor.

64-bit PC's have been been standard since at least 2003.  Is your PC 20 years old or older?

The workaround is to use TurboTax Online, but it lacks many of the features of the CD/Download software.

That's too bad.  I'm not comfortable providing all my tax info online and I have several businesses so it's not a simple return.  Sure would be nice if Intuit provided an alternate program that would work on a 32 bit machine. This really came as a surprise.

Understood. Unfortunately I'm running Windows 10 32 bit.

To run this on a machine that has 32-bit Windows, the machine would have to have an x64 processor and  you would have to run TurboTax in a virtual machine running a 64-bit version of Windows.  However, if you were to use a licensed copy of 64-bit Windows for this, it might make more sense to just upgrade your machine to 64-bit Windows, but that would require a clean installation of Windows and reinstalling all of the other software.  You could use an evaluation copy of a Windows 11 virtual machine from Microsoft, but these expire and after expiration shut down after each hour of use.

Thanks.  This makes sense.  It's probably time for a new computer anyway 🙂

I wish it would have been specified BEFORE I bought/downloaded my TT 2023

@dtinsley  The 64-bit requirement has been in the System Requirements since October.

I have the same issue, however, I loaded my 32 bit turbotax app and the associated data files on my new 64 bit  machine and it runs the 32 bit files. I had to get a couple .dlls  (data linking library) from microsoft  to get the CD to load but Intuit has that info available on their site.

I agree. I just tried to load TT Home & Business getting the message that my PC doesn't support the "minimum system requirements". I have used TT for many years & now I either have to upgrade my current PC , or buy a new one or ...!!! This has been a very frustrating experience. A notification well before January to all of their customers might have been helpful. Now, I have purchased a product I cannot use .

This company was once an excellent Company for customer friendliness, seems to be another example of getting to big to care about the "collateral damages" when broad, sweeping changes are made without thinking about the affect it may have.

Hello,

Any chance you can direct me to the DLLs you needed. Currently when I try to start TurboTax it freezes after the initial window. I assume it's because I am missing those DLLs.

Thanks!!!

I couldn't agree more. Came as an unpleasant surprise.

TT Premier 2022 and earlier were 32-bit and I had ZERO problems even under Windows 64-bit OS. 2023 programs are all 64-bit and will only run on Windows 64-bit OS. Windows 10 64-bit has extra security and I need to run TT 2023 as an administrator or else the program will close.  Starting a new return will close the program. Also, Help -> About -> Version will close the program. Warning to users who experience the program closing.

I have to wonder something. Did Intuit get a large kickback from Microsoft for this change?

Wish I had known about the 64 bit requirement before I purchased business TT CD 2023. I've used Turbo Tax for years with this laptop and never had issues previously. Very disappointed.

A portion of 2023 TurboTax needs the x86 version of the Visual C++ Redistributable package and the installer fails to install it.  You can obtain it from Microsoft:
