My NY license doesnt have a document number

This issue tends to come up with New York residents. The document number is an 8 or 10 digit alphanumeric number found either on the back of the license or lower right hand corner.   It is not the same as the drivers license number. Please see this link for a visual:

If you have an older license, like mine issued in 2011. There is no document id.

My wife's NYlicense issued late 2017 does not have a document number.  It isn't on the front bottom right.  It is not on the back.  None of the three places shown on the pictures have a document number.

We have one from dec 2017 with no document number (checked all three locations)

Perhaps you cannot find it.  Sometimes it is in tiny letters on the front of the lower right side of the license.  Now it is available on the back and easy to read and find.  If yours does not have it, it will be an oddity or special situation.
