If  for NY...depending on the license type...check the following pictures provided by NY:

AND, it is not the DMV ID number

Later Edit !!!!

Some folks (below) are saying it works if you enter ONLY the first three Alphabetic or Numeric characters....no more than that.

I felt dumb once I figured it out, ya just have to put the first 3 digits of the doc# like VEG

Not the case for me, unfortunately. I’m including everything after Doc# and it’s saying I must include the first three letters.

So now that I’ve actually figured it out…. I feel more stupid than you possibly could have. Oh. My. Goodness.

If you're using TurboTax Online, clear your Cache and Cookies and retry entering your driver's license number.  Make sure there's no spaces/extra characters, and the dates are for a valid license.

In most states, a driver's license is not required to file, so you may be able to 'skip' this entry and Continue.

Yay! You saved the day. Thank you. Entering only the first three digits worked for me when the field would not accept the 10 digit document number. I had also tried switching browsers and that did not work by the way.

Where are you entering your License Number?  What error do you receive?  If you're preparing a non-resident state return, your resident state driver license number should work.  Try entering only the first three letters.
