multi-state filing separately while filing jointly for federal

Hi,

I work in IL for the past few years (since 2016).  In 2020 I worked and paid IL state tax from Jan 1-May 31, and have moved back to CA Jun 1, while my wife's been in CA since 2008.  In the past few year, an account was doing my taxes.  This year, I tried online Turbo Tax and am having issue completing States filing correctly (IL & CA).  I've already paid Premier TT to file Federal and both States.  We are filing jointly for Fed; while reviewing states, I've noted TT default both my wife and I to file jointly, but she was never a resident of IL.  I will need to file IL separately and jointly for CA.  How can I do this with online TT Premier ed?

thanks, Doug

TurboTax Online will not allow you to prepare separate state returns and a joint federal return.

Your options:

  1. Create a married filing separate TurboTax Online account and prepare and mail (no e-file) Illinois. You’d have to pay again.
  2. Request the CD\Download version since you paid for TurboTax Premier and prepare and mail an Illinois return. This return will not match your federal joint filing, there is no e-filing. See: How do I prepare a joint federal return and separate state returns?
  3. File for free at MyTaxIllinois.
