Issues with state taxes refund

  • Hello everyone, I have a question regarding state taxes, so I participated in summer work and travel program 2025 and that requires a J1 visa and I was located in Maine, I filed my federal and state taxes but only my federal taxes have been accepted and the status of the state taxes is still pending so my question is: Am I supposed to do something specific or file some kind of paperwork to make the process faster or is it normal ?

@nouranaeem583 , not knowing the full  situation, just can say that  (a) IRS full  accepting and begin processing does not start till 01/26 ; (b) most states depend on IRS processing to start their own processing and lastly (c) IRS refunds   take generally two to three weeks ( including  processing)  to be disbursed.

Are you in the USA or back in your home country ( which country )?

Is there more I can do for you ?

I’m in my home country right now ( Egypt ), I was just asking because it shows that the federal taxes refund are accepted by the IRS and they estimated the reimbursement would be on 02/06/2026 but it still said pending on the Maine state tax refund and I thought it might be something wrong from my side.

There is nothing you can do to speed the processing of your state return. The return will be accepted or rejected at sometime in the future, and based on what happens with that you can proceed to correct the return if it is rejected. It is not unusual for the processing of the return to be slow this early in the tax season.
