Is there a way to fix the "Start State" loop?

I downloaded the Home & Business 2019 edition of TurboTax.  I started a return and when I get to state (IL), it wants to:

Check for Updates,
Download Updates (If Any),
Mentions that everything is Up To Date,
and go back to "Start State"

When I press "start" next to my state, it continues to do the same loop over.  Is there a way to fix that problem?  I don't want to regret paying for the Home & Business and have issues filing a state return.  I did check the form availability and it shows that IL is all good to go.

For some reason it posted under my brother-in-laws user although it was I who had the question.  It's Home & Business download link for Windows.  After updates to the program, I've restarted both program and my computer.  I've downloaded all updates to my computer as well (especially the .net framework updates), and I still have the same issue.  It's kind of irritating as my state forms are available and yet I keep having these issues as well as countless others.  Especially paying about $100 for a program that doesn't work correctly.  I know TurboTax changed some things with their programs between last year and this year, and I'm wondering if that's what's causing some of the issues.

TT deluxe cd/download on windows 10 64 bit appears to get my state return, says it is successful and would I like to continue. I say yes and then when I press start it re-downloads my state (Alabama) and the process keeps repeating.  When I view my detailed update history it shows I have successfully downloaded and installed the state multiple times, yet I cannot do my state return..it just keeps repeating the download process in a loop.

I was having the same issue with IL.  Update history shows everything was successfully updated but still goes into the same loop.

One thing that I did try....I redownloaded the program on my wife's computer.  Seems to have worked as I get to the payment page.  I did try logging in but keep getting an error that states something went wrong as if the credentials didn't match up (which I put them in correctly).  Just have to checkout as guest.

So if you have another computer....I'm not sure about any other TurboTax product besides the Home & Business, but I think you can install it on up to 5 computers.  For some reason State doesn't work on my computer (despite working in years' past), but does work on my wifes.

Thanks linobarraza.  I was thinking of trying the same thing.  I think I'll give it a try.  Like you, I have never had this problem in years past.

EDIT: This worked for me also.  I hope everyone with this problem has a spouse and a computer they can change to! Lol

I'm experiencing the same problem (windows 10, TT Home and Business). Called support last night and saying the result was a **bleep** show-  is being kind to **bleep** shows and legitimizing our current state of governmental affairs, both sides.

The way to fix this problem should NOT be - install it on another computer, cross your fingers.

I am using Windows 10. I am almost done with my tax, but I got stuck with state which going to the loop. It kept saying the software is updated yet it didn't show the amount. When click on the amount, it went back to the loop. Can someone please fix that issue? Thanks.

Unfortunately, the fix REALLY IS... install on a different computer, install state, then copy paste (the state folder, usually found somewhere near C> Program Files(86)> TurboTax> (TT version) Forms) to old computer and keep fingers crossed.

Very legit option for a product you paid for as ALL will attest to - right?

I have the same problem with Premier and installing the California program.  I spoke to three Turbotax support people and tried everything!  I followed the postings on this site which said to install on a different computer.  I installed it on a desktop and it worked!

Thanks. I will give it a try. But this is the first time that I am having this issue. Never ever in the past 10 years.

Considering the number of postings with the same issue,  it seems to be a problem with 2019.  I installed  2018 on the same computer and there were no problems.   This is the first year I've had this issue.

I'm using TurboTax Home and Business CD version with Windows and have the same problem with Utah. My software is up to date.

Edit: it would be nice if I had another computer..

Did everything, as described for Home and Business 2019 for Windows. I’m getting totally frustrated! I even have TT fix on my desktop. It won’t fix the issue.

I had the same problem on my laptop. I tried all of the fixes and I finally went to my desktop and got it to work. Once I saved my return, I could continue working on my laptop. I noticed in the postings that other users switched computers.

Please see this TurboTax FAQ for help on how to solve this loop: State install/e-file update loop: State not installed after installation or TurboTax needs to update prior to e-file

I didn’t have a problem for 2020, but the way I resolved the problem for 2019 was to use another computer. Once I saved the return, I was able to go to the original computer to open the file.

I'm having the same issue with the "Start State" loop.  Please tell me Intuit has a better fix than "redownload".  I done that a few times already because the 2021 Turbo Tax seems to really suck.  I've never had problems w/ TT until this year.  I guess I'll start looking at different software.

Are you using the desktop or online version this year? @beisnerwa
