IRS PIN

I got an IRS PIN last year March 5, 2021 and used it to file my 2020 tax return at the end of March 2021.

I know that the PIN is good for one year, so if I file my 2021 tax return at the end of February 2022 do I need to enter that PIN since it is technically still valid?

Do I get a PIN now every year from the IRS?

If so, can I opt out of that since it is a pain to deal with this?

thank you 🙂

No.  You can not op-out of this  IRS issues the pin every year until it is considered no longer necessary.  Here is what the IRS says about filing without your pin.

Per the IRS - If you file your return without your IRS assigned IP PIN:

  • We’ll reject your electronic return, and you won't be able to e-file
  • We’ll subject your paper return to additional screenings to validate your identity, delaying any refund you may be due

Below are steps for retrieving a pin online:

You may use our Get an IP PIN online tool to retrieve your current IP PIN. If you don’t already have an account on IRS.gov, you will be asked to register for an account and validate your identity.

If you previously created an online account and obtained an IP PIN, access Get an IP PIN and log in to your account. You may be required to verify your identity again due to our increased account security.

Thank you, I went online and got my 2022 new PIN… BTW the IRS will have an opt out option available at some point during 2022 😉
