IP Pin Field

Hi,

I am trying to file my 2021 1040 on the Mac version of Turbotax Deluxe.  Both my wife and I have IP-pins.  I believe we should be using our 2022 pin to file our 2021 1040 as we are filing in 2022.  We retrieved our pins from the IRS website.  The problem is they are 6 digits and the field in Turbotax only allows for 5 digits.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

Do not confuse the 5-digit pin for this year (chosen last year) with the 5-digit pin for next year (chosen now).

You can e-file by supplying either 2020 AGI or 5-digit PIN for this year.

To enter, edit or delete a 6 digit IP PIN

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Other Tax Situations
  • Scroll down to Other Return Info
  • On Identity Protection PIN, click the start button

Or enter ip pin in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ip pin

Thank you for your help. I was able to add the 2022 (six digit) IP-pin. The problem is on the signature page when e-filing our federal taxes.  It is looking for the 2021 pin (that we do not have) and only accepts fix characters.  What do we do with these fields.

Thanks!

You can enter any 5 digit number if required by the software.  You must enter your correct 2020 AGI so you can e-file your 2021 tax return.

I was able to enter the 6 digit assigned IP Pin, but when I get to the sign the form Pin page it will only let me enter 5 numbers instead of the 6 digit new IP Pin that I was given by IRS. Should I just enter the Pin that I used last year, leave it blank, use 5 of the 6 numbers from the new IP Pin that I was given by the IRS.  My efile was already rejected twice because of the PIN. I'm scared to hit send again. What do I do. I want to efile rather than print forms and send them in.

thanks

The 5-digit pin, which is your signature ID is something completely different from your 6-digit IP Pin.

If the system is asking for your 5-digit signature PIN, that is what you would need to enter into the system.

Where do I get the 5 digit signature Pin?  I only have a 6 digit pin.  My return was rejected because of a missing IRS pin.

The IRS does not reject an e-filed federal tax return for the 5 digit self-selected PIN used for e-filing.  The IRS needs the 2022 AGI and the 6 digit IP PIN they sent to you.
