incorrect 1099-NEC

I incorrectly received a 1099-NEC from an organization I volunteer for. The amount was not income but reimbursement for expenses. How do I handle this?

If you received a Form 1099-NEC only as a reimbursement, the net amount you owe should be zero, unless the refund is more than the money you spent.

When entering the information into TurboTax, you must include the income and create an equal offsetting expense. Follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to 1099-NEC:
    • TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to the 1099-NEC screen under Wages & Income.
      1. Go to Federal Taxes.
      2. Go to Wages & Income.
      3. If asked How do you want to enter…?, select I’ll choose what I work on.

Under 1099-MISC and Other Common Income, select Start or Update next to Income from Form 1099-NEC.
