Import 1099 from Etrade not working

I tried to import my 1099 from etrade but I get stuck in an endless loop of selecting the brokerage account (Etrade), then signing in, then "Continue" to import, then the login and import process in a web page (which seems to work) then "Success! You can now return to Turbo Tax" and then back to the "Continue" to import.

It never gets to the point in Turbo Tax where it recognizes that a 1099 has been imported.

Any ideas?

Thank you @kgalusha  - your comment led me to find this workaround in my case.

I was also using Edge as my browser - TT Desktop would invoke a new Edge window to try to connect to E*Trade.   When that process seemingly completed, there was no pop-up to accept the transfer, nor was there any indication that a pop-up was blocked.   Which I think is what led so many of us into the loop and going back to the "Continue" button in TT, which didn't do anything except frustrate ppl by repeating the process.

I changed my default settings to use Chrome for all browser content and tried it again.   Now, TT opens a Chrome window *(rather than an Edge window) to connect to E*Trade and after credentials are processed, data-xferred/etc, a pop-up appears that one has to accept to complete the transfer.

I did nothing that I know of to enable a setting in Edge, nor disable one in Chrome, so that this behavior was the case - but at least for me, setting Win11 to use Chrome for all Web/HTTP/HTTPS actions, "solved" the issue.

Thanks for the hint!

Is your 1099 ready for import? I have an account with E*Trade as do several family members and none of ours are even available yet.

The notice was that it was ready for import, and the message is "Import successful". Before it was ready I had a message that said that I had to wait, and that message is now gone. Maybe the problem is that the 1099 is not actually ready. But the messages should reflect that.

I think it takes a few days before they have the file ready for import into tax software.

I had same problem. Software reports it got the 1099 data, but returning to Turbo Tax premier edition show not imported data.

Your 1099-B isn't ready yet, that's why.

I download the hardcopy 1099 consolidated from E*Trade and TurboTax software didn't give any errors when I tried downloading it. It just is was downloaded but when I return to TurboTax there is no data.  So maybe not ready for TurboTax download, but in past years the software wouldn't try unless E*Trade data was ready.

people reported the same type of issue from Vanguard there is a permissions issue on the browser (and Turbotax has shitty error handling here), try solution here

Could just be different this year re the software and/or E*Trade. There are still some brokerage "partners" that do not appear in the import dropdown list.

It's not available for download into Turbo Tax yet.

I know the 1099 Consolidated Statement can be downloaded in a PDF format but downloading directly into Turbo Tax is a whole different story.  Wait until Feb. 15 as E-Trade has posted under Tax Schedule on their website.

The question of whether it will all work as-of/after Feb15 notwithstanding, what we're seeing is a terribly poor implementation.   I'm not sure anyone is trying to defend the behavior, but an app that tells you "Congratulations, we have your data - return to TT to continue", as it does for me (Desktop), but has no data and doesn't try to even present you with it, needs some attention to detail.   If you have no data, why are you telling us you do?

Yeah, I agree; the program shouldn't return that result if no data has been imported.

There is definitely an issue with the download. The 1099's are available. If you try to download you end up in the loop as described. Spent 45 minutes with support, the issue was supposedly escalated to the software team. I tried with both Chrome and Edge with the same result. The importer app looks like it is running on the intuit web site (app.intuit.com). Data may be making it there but the desktop client isn't picking it up. ugh.  And Merrill Edge isn't in the drop down any more. May be the last year for me and TurboTax. Isn't this suppose to make filing easier?

Yeah, but the other major tax prep s/w vendor is not much different. Merrill Edge isn't listed in the dropdown on H&R Block products either. Not sure what's going on this year.

Got the E*Trade data to complete download and appear in TurboTax a couple days ago.  Saw another similar question about another brokers data and a solution.  I had to do with pop up blocker (I used Edge) and accepting a pop up discovering other devices on the network.

@kgalusha  - Can I ask you the behavior you witnessed? After you supplied your credentials in the browser for Etrade, you got a success message that the data had transferred, then what? The success message (that I get) says to return to turbotax. Is that what you did? You returned to TT and it automagically continued? Or you had to click the continue button in the import window and you got a different message that the original (We will now launch your default browser....) ? Or was a there a pop-up that came up?

When I returned to TurboTax after E*Trade import (150 Line), the dividend and stock/option trades were populated.  It still asked me to confirm my cost basis on all my covered calls.  Keep in mind, all this worked after accepting my web browsers pop up message.  When I didn't accept it initially the date wasn't imported.

I didn't get a pop-up message.

After I got the successful transfer message I was told I could now return to Turbo Tax. So I did but the Turbo Tax screen had not changed. The option to "Continue" (to import) or "Skip Import" were there. So that screen did not appear to know that an import had occurred. Also I noted that in another screen where a list of all my various type of 1099s are listed new ones with no Brokerage Name had appeared, but these had no data in them.

Hmm I am using Chrome I will try to disable pop ups.

Level 3

OK, the pop up appears to be the issue. I am using google Chrome. But even when I allow pop ups the problem does not go away. Probably I'd need to close Chrome and restart it, but I am not willing to do that because I have other open tabs were I am working.

So instead I set my default browser to be Edge. Then I tried the import process, had to pick out the motorcycles to prove I am human, and then the import occurred. Then, crucially, I had to "allow" Edge to look for other devices on the network. I would not normally have wanted to do that, the message is terrible. It should say "you must allow this in order for the import to work properly".

Anyway, when I allowed it and then closed the browser window Turbo Tax now shows the imported 1099s from Etrade.

Very poor implementation in my opinion. But I got it to work.

Thanks to all the folks that suggested doing this.

The vanguard solution does indeed work for the E*Trade problem. But since the local access setting was most easily followed in Edge, I changed up using Chrome for the download to Edge, just for this particular instance. Works fine.

For me, I needed to enable "third-party data sharing" in etrade by doing:

login to E*Trade->

Profile->

Security Setting ->

Manage third-party data sharing

Allow supported third-party financial data services to connect to your E*TRADE user ID.

Do you want to allow third-party data sharing?

Answer Yes

That was already enabled for me as I have imported from Etrade to Turbo Tax in previous years.
