This is bunk.  I have the 2019 Turbo Tax Premier and there is only room for a 5 digit pin.  The Feds have issued my husband and I a six digit pin because of a previous identity theft (thank you Turbo Tax), and now I cannot enter the federally issued PIN?

Did you READ and TRY the answer posted above.  It is ONLY for a 6 digit IP PIN issued by the IRS.

This is not one of the questions/categories in the process of completing your 2020 tax filing.  There is driver license information, but not Identity Protection question.  This was cause for my initial filing to be rejected.

There needs to at least be a question for those of us who receive yearly filing identification IP Pin numbers.

May I get some clarification?

Are you getting a specific error message?  Or, are you saying there is not a section to enter your IP PIN?  Please respond here for further assistance.

It's simple.  The number of digits in the Federal assigned PIN number is six.  Last year your product required five digits.  I no longer use  your product because of this problem.  I'm not sure if this year's product uses six or five, but last year I had to file paper because of your product using five digits.  Not a good year to file paper.  This year, the FEDS have assigned another six digit pin number.

Why it took a year to address this matter is another reason I no longer use your product.

The 5 digit taxpayer self-selected PIN was used to file the tax return along with the prior year AGI.  It is used as the taxpayer's electronic signature on their Individual Income Tax Return only. However, taxpayers may also use it as a piece of authentication when signing the next year's tax return using electronic signature.

The 6 digit Identity Protection PIN is issued by the IRS each year in December or January for those who have reported being a victim of Identity Theft to the IRS.

TurboTax has always had the capability for a user of the software to enter their 6 digit IP PIN.

To enter a 6 digit IP PIN

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Other Tax Situations
Scroll down to Other Return Info
On Identity Protection PIN, click the start button

Or enter ip pin in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ip pin

Soooo, I have entered my 6 digit Identity Protection PIN in the correct area, but the SIGNATURE page (where we enter our DOB and today's date) auto-fills the OLD 5-digit PIN.   I see that this cell CAN be left blank and submission may proceed, but won't it just get kicked out by the Feds for being blank?

If you have a 6 digit IP PIN, you are supposed to use it and IRS assigns a new one to you each year.  That is what is supposed to display in the signature area by your signature line.  Please review what the labeling on the line where the 5 digit pin has been entered says.  Make sure it refers to needing the 6 digit IP PIN in that location.

You need to go back to that IP PIN section of the return and re-enter the new 6 digit IP PIN.  It will probably reject if you leave last year's 5 digit self-select pin in that IP PIN location.

Then, when you get ready to e-file, you can enter the 5 digit self-select pin.

I used TurboTax last year and elected to import information from last year's return into the return for this year. TurboTax remembered the 6 digit Identity Protection Personal Identification Number issued by the IRS so I was not prompted to enter it this year.

NOTE: The 6-digit IRS issued PIN is not the number that is needed for the 5-digit E-filing PIN. You can choose your own 5-digit PIN, but make note of it for future reference. If you lose the CP01A notice from the IRS with your 6-digit PIN you have to contact the IRS as per instructions in other messages on this forum. The IRS will mail you another copy of the letter, but it will take weeks to arrive. Most people don't have or need the 6-digit PIN because they are only issued upon request when a taxpayer thinks that their identity may have been stolen.

TurboTax fails to instruct users that the IRS issued Personal Identity PIN is good for only one year.

The IRS requires that a new Personal Identity PIN is obtained annually.
