2006 ?  Did you try requesting it from Social Security?  The SS website says they can provide wage and income statements as far back as 1978.

Are you sure you earned income in that year that was reported to the IRS or SSA?  Did you perhaps work for cash that was not reported? Do you remember who you worked for? If neither the IRS or Social Security have records of your earnings for that year, you may be out of luck.  This is one of the reasons people should always save their income records like W-2's and 1099's.

"w/o"    Without the W-2 info?  So even when you filed your tax return for 2006 you did not enter a W-2?  Out of curiosity, why is this an issue now in 2017?

To review...you filed a 2006 tax return without entering your W-2 information, and neither the IRS nor the Social Security Administration has any record of your earnings for that W-2.  You say you earned $48K and paid taxes on it.  Can you contact the former employer to get some verification from the employer?
Did you just talk to "someone" at the SS office or did you actually try making the written request to SS for that W-2?
Have you tried requesting a wage and income transcript from the IRS? They can provide a transcript for up to 10 prior years--you are kind of on the edge.

Talking to someone at SS was probably not enough.  If you are positive that you had a W-2 for 2006, then invest the $86 to get a copy of it from SSA.  Here is the link again:
