I keep receiving this Reject Code IND-116 and everything is correct ??

Please see the information below for the cause of this rejection code:

Reject code IND-116: For each dependent in 'DependentDetail' in the return, if 'EligibleForChildTaxCreditInd' is checked, then that dependent's age must be under 17.

  • If multiple dependents are present in this return, review the 'Description' field. There will be a number in brackets, [?], that identifies which dependent is causing this reject
  • Verify that the dependent's Name and Social Security Number have been entered correctly.
  • Verify that the dependent's date of birth is accurate.
  • Verify the Relationship entered is SON, DAUGHTER, GRANDCHILD, SISTER, BROTHER, NIECE, NEPHEW, FOSTER CHILD, STEPCHILD, STEPBROTHER, STEPSISTER, HALF BROTHER, or HALF SISTER.


If you've already gone through the steps above and you feel this message was received in error, contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) at 1-800-772-1213 to verify that their records are accurate. If SSA records need to be corrected, it can take up to four weeks to transfer the updated information to the IRS. Please wait four weeks and then re-file the return.

If the reject continues, or if you do not want to wait four weeks to re-file electronically, then your best option is to paper file.
