I have a question

My daughter is entering law school.  I do not want to claim her as a dependent if it will interfere with her awards for financial aid...on the other hand, not claiming her will significantly change what I owe the IRS

It doesn't matter whether you actually claim her of nor. If you CAN claim her under the IRS rules,  she cannot "claim herself."

On the other hand, the financial aid office may have different requirements, so ask them.
