What is preventing you from e-filing the 2020 tax return?  What message are you receiving when you try to e-file?

Validation failed: Tax program Update Required There is an update available for your tax program.  Before you can file electronically, you must get this update.

Tax program Update required - there is an update available for your tax program............

Looks like we've had a technical hiccup.

Try e-filing again. If that doesn't work, you can print your return and file by mail.

What message do you receive when you try and e-file the tax return?

I get a message that says:
Tax Year 2021 transmissions are not available - TurboTax is not ready to process tax year 2021 for this return.

What does that mean?

I am getting the same message.  What is wrong with Turbo Tax this year?  In past years, when you signed in it looked for any updates.  Is is no longer doing that?  How do you update?

I am having the same problem, and it's Thursday, 2/10. I get a message saying tax year 2021 transmissions are not available. Turbo Tax is not ready to process Tax Year 2021 for this return. And I already paid the $20 to efile- what gives, Intuit?

What is the error message you are receiving?
If the error is related to your state return, which state?

I am getting an error saying Turbo Tax cannot file for 2021, trying to file for NC. I guess the NC forms are not ready, perhaps?

It does appear that some North Carolina state tax forms are available but several are still pending. You can check the status of the specific forms needed for your North Carolina return in the link below.

State forms availability table for TurboTax individual (personal) tax products

If you find that the forms needed for your return are available and you are still receiving the error message, please comment back.

Same problem with NC return. Is there not a way to submit Federal and Intuit/TurboTax submit the NC forms once ready? How to we submit them separately? It is highly unethical to push your promotion for Free filing with a deadline of Feb 15th but not have the issues resolved so people can actually transmit the returns. This is one of numerous posts on this issues going back over a week. Please advise!!!!

You can file your federal return now and then come back and finish up your state return when all of the forms are ready. Please see Can I file my federal taxes now and skip my state for later?

Tried selecting just Federal return, and it still gives the same error.

This issue is happening to me, too. I'm also an NC filer. I have no issues accessing the Internet, and TurboTax did a great job of accepting my $20 for the automatic deposit of the refund. I'm not willing to delete the state and start over later. I very likely would have to pay that $20 again. What's the root cause of this issue? Is it really that Intuit hasn't entered all of the NC forms yet???

I was able to just file my federal return by unchecking the option to file the NC state return at the beginning of the e-file process. So now I am just waiting for these NC forms to be finalized. There is a article I found online that says the NC tax forms won’t be ready until mid-February.

I am also from NC, and saw this error.  I was also able to efile just the Fed tax return.  I just hope when I go back to do the NC return they don't try to charge me again.

I was able to transmit both my federal and RI tax forms yesterday after installing the latest updates to TurboTax.

Thankfully, I also was able to submit only my federal. I didn't realize that there was an option to submit the one and not the other. It helps to read the app. 😄

I'm getting the following message and I'm not sure what to do about it? Is this an issue with TurboTax or is it something on my end. I've never experienced this issue in the past.

The Intuit Electronic Filing System is having difficulty recognizing the data in the return you are sending. Make sure your TurboTax program is up-to-date: Go to the Online menu and select Check for Updates. If you still can't transmit your return, go to www.support.turbotax.com for a solution or workaround. In some cases, you may need to file this return by mail. - Tax Year 2021 transmissions are not available. - TurboTax is not ready to process Tax Year 2021 for this return.
