I wish I had better news for you on your question. Easy extension is the way to go if you want to e-file it (link provided in answer). Otherwise, print and mail from your desktop software.
I cant seem to find out how to get to the 4468 form in my TT H&B? It does not show up in my list of forms and the only thing I see when I search for 4468 is this help answer?
Will the e-filed extension be associated with my return after I e-file it?
No, unfortunately e-filing for extensions is not available using TurboTax Desktop. Information on e-filing extensions and a link to do so is provided here. Need-More-Tax-Time--File-a-Tax-Extension
Thank you for the answer but I strongly recommend this feature be added. We paid a lot of money to download Turbo Tax Desktop and I expected to be able to file all forms electronically.
I agree with this comment. I am extremely disappointed that Turbo Tax does not support e-file of an extension from their desktop product (that is paid for), but rather requires information be re-entered online to complete this process. This is extremely not user friendly.
Same problem, I have Deluxe and could only efile extension thru online Easy Extension. It was accepted but is PDF format which will not mesh with my desktop deluxe software. My desktop deluxe turbotax thinks no extension has been filed. Is it going to keep warning me and then add estimated payments or penalties when I do file my return?
I agree this is Bull**** The box needs to say that you TT doesn't have capability to do this!! Come on now
Agreed.. First time filing for an extension and disappointed that turbo tax desktop version does not allow you to e-file.
Also running into this same problem. First time needing to file for an extension and disappointed that TurboTax Premier (desktop version) doesn't allow an e-file
If you owe taxes you can make a payment online and the extension is automatically filed for you on the irs.gov site.
Is it still true that no efile extension from desktop version turbotax?
That's correct. But you can create an online account and efile from there. To get started, click this link.
Hi everyone,
Just an FYI: It was a nightmare trying to file an extension with IRS and the 2 states I needed to file an extension for. TurboTax would only print form 4868 and one of the state extension and told me to mail it. For the other state, TurboTax told me not to worry about it. After spending 3 hours trying to figure out how to get TurboTax to e-file the extension for me for all 3 (searching TurboTax help and the community boards), it was easier to file it directly with each of the tax authorities involved. 20 minutes later, extensions done with a confirmation from each tax authority.
I am writing to let people know that if you have the same issue, it's faster and gives more piece of mind, go through the tax states for IRS and your state(s).
Hope this is useful to you.

For Fed Tax Extension, I did it on IRS website when you paid 2020 via extension. It says, for Form 4868 is not needed to be mail in. Is that your experience? thanks for the reply.
Yes. The same.
TurboTax had not had such issues with their UI in several years, but there seems to be issues this year.
from Extension of Time To File Your Tax Return | Internal Revenue Service (irs.gov)
Get an extension when you make a payment
You can also get an extension by paying all or part of your estimated income tax due and indicate that the payment is for an extension using Direct Pay, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), or a credit or debit card. This way you won’t have to file a separate extension form and you will receive a confirmation number for your records.
