How do I share my account with my spouse using separate credentials?

I've been filing joint tax returns using TurboTax for years. I'm able to sign into my account using my credentials. How can I grant my wife access to our returns without sharing my credentials with her? What happens if I should die and she needs to easily gain access to my (really "our") account?

I saw something about "linked identities" in the help file with little, if any, information on it.

Sorry, unless you give your account and user ID information to your spouse, she cannot access your TT account.  TurboTax accounts cannot be combined or merged.  If you are concerned about her ability to access your joint tax records in the event of your death or ill health, then provide her with that information.  If you don't, then it will be impossible for her to get in to the TT account without a huge runaround and process of providing your death certificate and all kinds of documentation to get into the account.

In fact, here is a copy of a TurboTax response to someone who was in that situation:

Filing for relative who died

Hello @nardit1, I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I understand that this may seem like a lot to get into an account but we must take all due precaution to ensure the protection, privacy, and security of customer account information. We wish to make sure that the data your sister-in-law entrusted us with is protected.
You will first need to fill out an Email Change Request: https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899319
In addition to your own photo ID, you must include one of the following documents:

  • A copy of the Death Certificate – The name of the surviving spouse will need to be matched to a Joint E-filed Return in our system
  • A court order issuing Power of Attorney for the deceased and IRS form 56. (required for non spouse)
  • A court order marking them the executor of the estate and IRS form 56. (required for non spouse)

These additional documents may be included with the initial scan of the Photo ID.
You will also need to print and mail the return and include IRS Form 56.
I hope this helps!

And further....if you have been filing joint tax returns for years, your wife has "signed" those returns also.  Why are you keeping your "credentials" hidden from your wife?

Always save a copy of the return as a PDF & a .taxfile on a thumb drive and put it with your other important papers so you & your personal rep would have them handy if needed...then access would not be an issue.

Thanks, but that only works if you can sign in. I’m trying to update my deceased father’s account. I have all the necessary documents, but the link I need doesn’t work.

thanks

You will need to contact TurboTax support again and let them know that the link they provided is no longer active and they have to give you another way to resolve this issue.
