Do you have another browser on your computer?  What browser are you using now?  You can download Chrome or Firefox.

I have Firefox and Safari. My operating system (OSX 10.8.5)

won't allow update. I have been using turbotax for years with this system. Now I can't get to my account.

You only need a browser if you are using TurboTax Online.  Here are the Minimum system requirements for TurboTax Mac software.

I open my turbo tax from the desktop icon. I don’t know which browser I used. I have both Firefox and chrome.  I was advised to change browsers because I’m not able to type in the windows.

If you are opening your Turbo Tax from the icon, it sounds like you used the downloadable desktop version not online. It would be best to follow the instructions here to manually update the software to resolve your issue.
