  • Your information shows that you are using Turbo Tax Free Edition.
  • To import last years information you will need to upgrade to PLUS.

Personalized steps on how to upgrade to PLUS

Sign in to your TurboTax account and follow the steps below:

1. Click on My Tax Timeline under My TurboTax.

2. Click on Load my Tax Timeline across from Looking for prior year returns?

3. Click on the “>” to the right of the Tax Year you want.

4. At the Pay for PLUS benefits screen below (or a similar version), click on the following these instructions link for step by step instructions on how to add PLUS for your specific situation.

My accountant is currently doing my 2017 returns. Can I import those after she is done so that I can do mine for next year. Or what do you suggest?

So, you did not actually answer the QUESTION.  You answered a different question (How do I upgrade to PLUS?)  So, WHY do searches for importing last year's info give us THIS answer?  This is useless.

I am not using a free edition.  I purchased the deluxe edition at Cosco. In past years the data always transferred over from the prior year but this year it did not.  How do I get it to transfer?

You need to have the .tax file for the last year on your hard drive for the TurboTax Desktop to pick up last year's data.

If you used the TurboTax Desktop CD/Download last year, you need to transfer (via thumb drive) the 2018 .tax file from your old computer.

If you used TurboTax Online last year, you will need to download the .tax file from your online account.

  • Sign in to your TurboTax account.
  • On the first page, you come to, scroll down until you come to Tax Returns and Documents, click Show
  • Click 2018, and then download .tax file

Once you have the .tax file on the same hard drive as your TurboTax software, the software import the data in the file.

More info is needed.  It depends on how you prepared your 2019 return--Online TurboTax or 2019 desktop software (CD/download), as well as what you are using for your 2020 return--Online TurboTax or 2020 desktop software.

If you used Online TurboTax for your 2019 return last year, and if you are using Online TurboTax again for your 2020 return, and if you are in the same account, the 2019 data should have transferred in automatically.  If it didn't, we can tell you how to look for multiple accounts.

If you are using 2020 desktop software (CD/download), do you have the tax data file from last year on your computer; i.e., the *.tax2019 data file?    If you are using desktop software, are you using the Windows version or the Mac version?

We can tell you more when you explain all that.

@marshall_main   You added on to an old thread.  What is your question about Prrmier?  Online Premier or Desktop Premier?
