If you need copies of the actual W-2 forms, there are three ways to get them.

  1. Ask your employer(s) for another copy.
  2. Get them from the Social Security Administration. There is a fee of $86. See the following link. https://faq.ssa.gov/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=3836
  3. If you filed your tax return by mail and attached copies of your W-2s, a copy of your return from the IRS will include copies of the W-2s. You have to request a copy of your return by filing Form 4506. It costs $50 for each tax return and takes up to 75 days to get them. See the following link for details. https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc156.html

If you just need the information from your W-2 forms, but not an actual copy, there are two other sources.

  1. A PDF of your tax return from TurboTax with all forms and worksheets will include a W-2 worksheet for each W-2 that you entered. This will show you what you entered in TurboTax. The accuracy of the information depends on how accurately you entered it.
  2. You can get a Wage and Income Transcript from the IRS for free. This will contain the information from all the W-2s that were sent to the IRS by your employers. However, it does not include the state and local information (boxes 15 - 20). Go to the following link to get a transcript. You want a Wage and Income Transcript, not a Tax Return Transcript. https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

TurboTax does not have copies of your W-2s. It has only the W-2 information that you entered, as mentioned above.

@Mikie886  You need the originals?  The ones you should have saved for your own records?  Ask the employer for copies.

I NEED A COPY OF MY W-2  (or 1099)

TurboTax does not have a copy of your W-2—the Wage & Tax Statement—issued to you by your employer, (nor does TurboTax have copies of your 1099’s).   You should always save those documents for your own records. You could ask the employer(s) for copies or you can get a copy from Social Security (for a fee of $86).

If you saved a pdf of your completed tax return, the worksheets will show the W-2 information you entered, but not the actual W-2.

To get a copy of a W-2 from Social Security https://faq.ssa.gov/en-us/Topic/article/KA-02501

https://www.irs.gov/help-resources/tools-faqs/faqs-for-individuals/frequently-asked-tax-questions-answers/irs-procedures/transcript-or-copy-of-form-w-2/transcript-or-copy-of-form-w-2

You can get a wage and income transcript from the IRS:  It will not show the actual W-2, 1099’s, etc, but will show the income information the IRS received.  It will not, however, show your state information. It will only show the federal information.

As stated on the back of the W-2 -
Keep Copy C of Form W-2 for at least 3 years after the due date for filing your income tax return. However, to help protect your social security benefits, keep Copy C until you begin receiving social security benefits, just in case there is a question about your work record and/or earnings in a particular year.

TurboTax does not have a copy of the W-2 or Form 1099. It would have W-2 and Form 1099 worksheets that included the tax data from the forms that were entered. The worksheets would be included in the PDF of the tax return in the tax year the return was completed.

Copies of a Form 1099 would have to obtained from the issuer of the form.

To access your current or prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the userID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and on the section Your tax returns & documents click on Show. Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)

If you cannot obtain the W-2 from your employer, then for a fee you can get a complete copy of a W-2 from the Social Security Administration - https://faq.ssa.gov/en-us/Topic/article/KA-02501

You can get a free Wage and Income transcript from the IRS - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

For a fee of $50 you can get a complete federal tax return to include copies of W-2's, if you mailed the tax return and included a paper W-2, from the IRS by completing Form 4506 - http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf

If your employer at that time is still in business, you should try to contact them first to see if they can send you a copy of your W-2 Form from that year.

If you are unsuccessful there, you can always refer to the following information on the IRS website.  You can either request a copy if you submitted a copy of your W-2 with your tax return.  Or you can contact the Social Security administration to request a copy as well.
