Form 8839 2021

When will turbo tax have form 8839 uploaded?  the form shows on the IRS website that the updates for 2021 has already been completed but I can't move forward in turbo tax because it is saying this form is not ready.  I filed this form last year and still have carryforward credit so I know this form was available last year because I have been using Turbo Tax for several years.

Form 8839, Qualified Adoption Expenses will be available on 02/03/2022. Once the form is finalized by the IRS, it has to be coded and tested for calculations and e-filing acceptability.

Did you end up hearing an update on this? I am in the same boat as you. I would like to be able to file this week but the software said "ready soon" for that form.

Last update I got says March 3rd. I ended up using TaxAct. The form is ready there and I filed last week.

Turbo Tax said form 8839 would be ready to use on February 3, 2022.  It is now February 22, 2022, and I still cannot file because the form is not ready.  Why is Form 8839 not ready NOW?  It is on the IRS website ready for use, yet Turbo Tax says you cannot file it by mail or E-File it.  I pay A LOT for this program, and I am mad that it is not up to date.

So essentially, it is a Turbo Tax coder issue.

I paid for Turbo Tax, and I expect the product to be up to date and to work like Tax Act where Form 8839 is available to use, as it is on the IRS website.

It's 2/22/22 and it's still not available.  :(

TurboTax has known about the problem for weeks and it's still not corrected.

It may take longer for one form or another to show up in TurboTax for multiple reasons. Our goal is to provide you with the most accurate information possible. As part of this process, we communicate often with the taxing agencies. Form 8839 is currently scheduled for release on March 3, 2022. You can monitor the status of the form in the below TurboTax help article. If the form becomes available sooner than the currently published date, the article will be updated to reflect the new availability date.

I attempted to file my taxes today and I'm getting an error on the form 8839 requiring me to state that my child's adoption has not been finalized...which it has.  Even if I select "no" as it requests, it sends me to the same question over and over again.

The update to form 8839 was expected to be updated today but even after I update, I am showing an additional payment for the credit.  I thought the adoption credit was non-refundable which means it would only go into effect if I owed on my federal return.  I was getting a refund even before the 8839 info was entered.  Is this right?

Same here. I have used Turbo Tax for years, but I am seriously considering switching. By the way, their live help is worthless. I got a message that they would call me back in 5 minutes. That was 2 hours ago. Wasted $60 upgrading.

I spoke with customer support today about the error on the page and after sitting on hold, I was told to try again in 2 more days. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Can someone let me know when this is available?  Its now available in the system, but I have to check a "No" radial box on the form to be able to e-file and every time you check the box it disappears.  But can't e-file with out it.  This is a simple check box.  Can someone please email me when this is ready.  Been waiting weeks for this one form to e-file.

We don't have a way to email alerts of when forms are available through this public forum, but you can save this post that has the links you can check the availability statuses. Here is the IRS's forms availability table. And, here is the forms availability table state by state.

It is still not working. It only works if I put the wrong date of birth for my daughter… otherwise it is doing what everyone is describing. We have a carryforward for up to 5 years…. SOMEONE FIX THIS

I spent 2 hours with customer service and they had no clue what to do so they said to paper file it. This worked fine last year. It works if I put 2004 as her birthdate, but I cannot file it that way because her birthday is 2002. By tax law I get a carry forward for 5 years no matter her current age, as long as she was adopted prior to turning 18, which she was. THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED!

What is the status on the error with the birth year? I’m having the same issue.

From what I can tell it has to be a coding error in the software trying to cap the age of the adopted child… though, no matter the current age, if you adopted the child prior to them turning 18, you have rights to a carry forward claim for 5 years. This is a software issue and a turbo tax issue… all TurboTax could tell me is to mail in my tax return…
