You print and mail to IRS center for the area where you live and you can go here to find address for center for your area https://www.irs.gov/uac/where-to-file-paper-tax-returns-with-or-without-a-payment. If you are filing the Form 8379 by itself after a joint return has been processed by the IRS, then processing will take about 8 weeks.

If you have not already created the form in TurboTax, the steps to do that are here below as well:

  1. If you are using TurboTax Online, open your return and sign in.  On the Welcome home screen, select Taxes. On the Tax Timeline screen, select Amend (change) return. (If you are using the CD/Download product, open your return.)
  2. When your return is open, In the search box, search for injured spouse and then click the "Jump to" link in the search results. Answer Yes to Do you want to claim innocent or injured spouse relief? and carefully follow the onscreen instructions for Injured Spouse.
  3. Then print and mail to IRS center for the area where you live and you can go here to find address for center for your area https://www.irs.gov/uac/where-to-file-paper-tax-returns-with-or-without-a-payment
NOTE: More details can be found here https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1910698 if you have not already filed and want to include with your return.

I found the TurboTax form more difficult to complete than the IRS's version. It would be really nice if TT could auto-populate the line items from the completed 1040 into column (a) of the 8379.

I already filed my 2019 Federal and state taxes. Where do I mail my form 8379?

It depends on whether you filed your original return on paper or via e-file.

Please see the Where To File chart and the link below it in the IRS's Instructions for Form 8379 to determine the appropriate mailing address.

I’ve filed a 8379 form for my 2018 tax and it’s been seven weeks how do I know even if they have revived the form?

If you would like to find out a status of your request you can call the IRS customer service number 800-829-1040.

Yes, reaching them at a time like this good luck. I’ve called and it tells me to call back next business day.

@Thad83

Once the IRS has processed your original Form 8379, you’ll receive a notice from them.  Here are the standard timeframes:

  • When you file Form 8379 with a joint return electronically, the time needed to process it is about 11 weeks.
  • When you file Form 8379 with a joint return on paper, the time needed is about 14 weeks.
  • When you file Form 8379 by itself after a joint return has already been processed, the time needed is about 8 weeks.

Please see Injured Spouse FAQs for more information.

With the Coronavirus outbreak, of course, the standard timeframes may not apply.

You will mail the form to the IRS service center for your state. You can find that information here: Where to file IRS forms by mail.

Be sure to use the address for forms sent WITHOUT payment.
