Form 1098-T

When I attempt enter my form 1098-T, I get the message "You should still enter your education expenses to avoid paying tax on your Educational Savings Account (ESA) or qualified tuition program (QTP)."  But there is no way to enter these expenses or to enter my form 1098-T.

It depends on the menu path you pursue.  Here is how to report the 1098 -T into the program.

  1. Click on the Federal tab in the left-hand sidebar.
  2. Along the top of the main screen, click on Deductions & Credits.
  3. Scroll down to the section titled Education. You may need to click "See all tax breaks" or "Show more" to reveal it.
  4. Click Start (or Revisit) next to Expenses and Scholarships (Form 1098-T).
  5. You will likely see a screen asking, "Did you get a 1098-T?" or "Do you want to enter your education expenses?" Select yes.

If you follow those steps and still see the ESA/QTP warning without an option to enter anything, TurboTax has marked that section as complete with a zero value. To reset it:

  1. Go to the Tax Tools > Tools menu on the left.
  2. Select Delete a form.
  3. Look for Form 1098-T or Education Tuition Worksheet.
  4. Delete it. 5. Now, go back to the Deductions & Credits > Education path. It will treat you like a "new" user for that section and finally open the data entry boxes.

Once this is cleared, go back to the first set of steps I have outlined above to enter the 1098-T.

Thanks, Dave.  I deleted the forms 1098-T from "tools"  "my tax data" and then went to "Your deductions and credits"  "education" and "visit all" and deleted the 1099-Q data,  then reentered the 1099-Q data when prompted but Turbotax premium still only will take me to "your adjusted gross income . . . exceeds the maximum limit"  and "You should still enter your education expenses to avoid paying tax on your Education Saving Account (ESA) or qualified tuition program (QTP)."  When I hit the "continue" icon, it takes me back out to deductions & credits with no option to enter the 1098-T data.  It appears to be some sort of software bug.  Very frustrating.
