Financially supporting others

We financially supported my in-laws to visit grandchildren (we spend a lot of money) last year. Can I claim the cost as charity? Or Can I claim the cost to any kind? Thanks!

No, you can't claim the money you gave to family members as a charitable contribution. The IRS only allows deductions for contributions made to qualified charitable organizations, not to individuals.

For more information, please see page 6, Contributions You Can't Deduct, in IRS Pub 526, Charitable Contributions.
