Filing multiple returns

I am helping a parent file federal and state taxes this year. I already have turbo tax premiere installed on my computer and tried to install a different version for them but it wouldn’t let me. Can I file their federal and state taxes using the one I already purchased but under another username and account?

If you are using Premier desktop software on your own hard drive, you do not "log in" or "log out" when you are using the software.  You are using a program that is on your own hard drive.  You launch it from your own computer, go up to the top of your screen, click FILE, and then click NEW RETURN to start a return for your parents.   With desktop download software, you can prepare and e-file up to five federal returns and the state returns that go with them, so you are fine to prepare a return for your parents and e-file it for them.  The only fee might be a state e-file fee of $25, but you can avoid the state e-file fee if you print and mail the state.

And....make sure you SAVE the return and put their name on it so as not to confuse it with your own return.   Always save your work before exiting the program.

Thank you so much for the info. The TurboTax premier come with one state filing, will I have to pay for a second one?  From your comment it sounds like only if I efile both?

With desktop that has a state program you can prepare state returns for that one state with each federal return if you need to and either e-file them (for a $25 e-file fee) or print and mail them.   You do not pay for preparing the state returns, just for e-filing them.

If you prepare a return for a family member in a different state, then you have to pay for the software for that different state.   If your family members are in the same state, you do not pay for state software twice.

@ewas1969 If you are using the TurboTax desktop editions, the answer has been provided on this thread.

If you are using the TurboTax online web-based editions, you can only complete and file one tax return per account and User ID.  For another tax return using the online editions you will need to create a new account, a new User ID and use a new email address.

Go to this TurboTax website and click on Sign up to create a new account - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/file-your-own-taxes/

If you are using online TurboTax each return needs its own email, account and user ID.  With online TurboTax, you get one return per fee, and pay fees for federal and state.

When you use online TurboTax software you get one return per fee.

Each return needs its own email, account and user ID.   If you use the same account and user ID for a second return, the second one overwrites the first return and it is lost forever.

If you are using desktop download software, you go to the tool bar at the top of your computer screen and click on File and then "New Tax Return" in order to start another return for a family member, etc.   With desktop software you can prepare and e-file up to five federal returns and their associated state returns; if you need to file more than five, the additional returns can be filed by mail.

In the desktop version of TurboTax you can E-File file up to 5 tax returns.

If you've started an initial return, it will auto-save upon exit, but to be safe you may want to save it manually.

  1. In the very top right corner above the Red Circle and check mark
  2. Select File
  3. I suggest SAVE AS for the first time (Just SAVE after that)
  4. Enter a name that describes the individual on the return and the year
  5. If you want to start a new return
    1. Use the same File button
    2. Select New Tax Return
