filing married jointly or separately

one spouse makes a considerable amount more income than the other ... would it be advisable to file separately?

Filing married filing separately is rarely beneficial in lowering you income taxes. You can always try by preparing 3 tax return,  in essence, yours, mine, and ours.  If you live in a community property state, married filing separate is not an available option due to the fact that everything is divided equally.
