Please see the suggestions below:
If you're on a PC, open TurboTax and select Check for Updates from the Online menu near the top. Tips:
If you're using a Mac computer and you want to make sure you're up-to-date, quit and reopen TurboTax. If you're not on the latest release, the program will automatically download it.
If that doesn't work, you can force a download of the most recent update.
Thank you for your response.
I tried to update from the menu and it didn't work. I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling the software and that worked.
The question states that the user checked for updates and there are none. This response does not solve the issue.
I tried all of that. Getting "Failed Validation". I uninstalled and reinstalled Deluxe 2020. Still could not E-File Federal. I have wasted about 3 hours this afternoon monkeying with this crummy piece of software--I expect much better.
Do you have any suggestions? I am just gonna mail them in if it's going to take another weekend to fix this bug.
Phone technical support was more or less useless. Wasn't sure who I was talking to. Some guy in India. Maybe sending my PII to the dark web. Very creepy feeling this year. Feels like fraud.
Also getting the following when trying to e-file just Federal:
FAILED_VALIDATION. There is an update available for your version of TurboTax. Before you can file electronically, you'll need to get this update. To do this, go to the Online menu and select Check for Updates.
There are no updates available. Tried the Manual update. And everything else that everyone else has been trying.
TurboTax, we need some resolution!!!!
I have this same issue. I tried the forced download update trick (well, good tricks work..) and go nowhere. I removed and reinstalled (that's not a short process). And still I have this issue.
Intuit, we have ONE WEEK before we're hosed and have to file paper. FIX THIS PLEASE.
A 20 year user of your software might not see another year at this rate.
Yes. I have the same issue and have been loyal for about 20 years also.
Really frustrated that intuit has screwed up this program.
Speechless that you are not disturbed by the number of customers you will loose with this poor service.
I am having this same issue, now a week from the filing deadline, have tried several days, updating the software, restarting my PC, no change. I really don't want to mail my taxes in as the eFile is a big part of why I even pay for Turbotax.
Getting the same problem others have when attempting to e-file federal taxes. Once the transmit button is pressed, Quicken comes back with "FAILED_VALIDATON. there is an update available for your version of TurboTax. Before you can file electronically, you'll need to get this update. To do this, go to the Online Menu and select Check for updates". I have the checked for the latest update and appear to have it (4/29/2021); Turbotax says "Your software is up to date". I've tried manually updating and uninstalling/reinstalling; still get the same Failed validation message. Help! it's almost 17 May when taxes are due!
I spent 3 hours on support call and came up with a resolution.
I installed TurboTax from a CD that I purchased.
The solution involved downloading the install from https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/cd-download. However, I did have to get a new License Code from the support agent. Once I downloaded, I removed the CD installation and reinstalled with the downloaded file. Once installed and running through the updates as usual. It worked.
The CD installation that I purchased appeared to not be accepting the Updates as expected.
Sorry, I should have also included that the support agent put the installation in My Downloads with the new Licence Key. I know that on the CD there are instructions to download instead of using the CD, so maybe you all can correct you problem by following the download instructions.
Hopefully, you will not have to spend 3 hours on the phone.
I am having this samee issue I am going too try and uninstall and downlaod from the website.
Well unfortunately I can't download it fromthe site as I already installed it with the CD and the license was activated thisis very frustrating...
So I have run repair, manual update, and uninstalled/reinstalled. Still not able to efile a federal return. WTH?
2020 Turbo Tax Sucks A BIG ONE. Spent hours 5/9/2021 with a SO CALLED SPECIALIST. He said to wait 24 hours and try again, they would push update to me. NO HELP BUDDY WITH THE ACCENT. I have a case #[social security number removed] BUT THE PROMPT WON'T ALLOW ME TO SPEAK WITH LIVE PERSON. WHAT TO DO?
SAME issue here. Been trying to submit my federal and two state returns (IL and WI) all day/afternoon. Going on hour 6 of just trying to submit. Been hung up on by support 3x and finally got someone who stuck with me for an hour plus of problem solving, however she didn't seem to understand the difference between the mac app and the web based app and kept asking me to try another browser. So.... how do I get to e-file after paying all this money for the program, the extra state download, and the two state filing fees? Nothing is working. I am on a Macbook Air (OS 10.14.6). This is the first year TurboTax has been so useless.
I am getting the same error. What number can I call to get this fixed.
So I finally was able to transmit. But only after the support person got me up and running on a Windows machine I had around the house. Once I had the program installed onto Windows and the additional states loaded, the transmission step was over and done in 30 seconds. Clearly some MAJOR work needed on their Mac software to deliver on their promises. I spent over 10 hours yesterday trying to transmit and 4 of those hours was with their support.
In case it helps, other the support person said that they have been having a LOT of these Mac issues and that it is is different each time. Sometimes a complete uninstall/reinstall helps. Not just delete the App file but removing all of the system files on the computer. I couldn't find a good list of everything, but support directed me here: https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/installing/help/remove-uninstall-turbotax-for-mac/00/26050
I was on Mac Mojave. I had one large pending system update yet to install that I thought was the problem, so you could try that. Ultimately, it did not resolve my error though. I did the full uninstall/reinstall on MacOS 10.14.6 - fully updated. The support person said do NOT update to Big Sur - they are having TONS of problems with Big Sur despite claiming their software works on that platform.
What a nightmare. Maybe they should just go to 100% web based?
Same issue on a Windows 10 workstation. The first set of forms (federal, state) worked fine prior to the latest updates. A recent new return forced a Turbotax update to the desktop installation, which broke the ability to transmit forms to either Fed or State. Doing a reinstall of the software from CD didn't resolve the issue. Attempted to call/contact Intuit support which only brought me here to complain about the buggy software. The only silver lining is that I saved transmitting fees to the State. You lost revenue Intuit, and probably a customer with the poor technical support.
Suggest calling Turbotax [phone number removed]) and have your product key. Apparently each product key (for Deluxe version at least) is limited to five e-filings. The Failed_Verification error appears to be caused by attempting e-file more than five times on a given product key. I bought and downloaded Turbotax from SoftwareDiscountUSA.com. Not sure if they sold the same product key more than once. The answer from Turbotax initially was to buy the software again. Said "no" to that and finally got another download and key from them so I could e-file. Worked fine...no "Failed_Verification" error.
I've been trying to file since Sunday also. Same failed validation on my Mac book pro. I've already filed 3 peoples taxes (my family) on this program and mine would be the 4th so I should be able to. And of course I've checked for updates and it says I'm up to date. Come on Turbo-tax!!! fix this
I had the exact same problem that I have worked on for over 4 hours! So frustrating! And I already paid for my state of Illinois tax return to be e-filed. How do I get a refund of that amount? Personally, I think we should get a refund for the product or a credit for next year. It would have cost less to take it to a tax preparer based on the time I have wasted. This appears to be a long term issue from all the comments!

Found this solution in another thread. IT WORKED (and I had already tried all other suggestions)! You'll need to bypass your WiFi router and plug your computer directly into your modem. Instructions from @nothanks23 : unplug router's power cord to turn it off; de-attached the Ethernet cable that connected my modem and router; unplugged my modem's power cord; re-plugged it in to reboot it; connected my laptop to my modem via the Ethernet cable (I had to use a USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter since my laptop does not have an Ethernet port). Once that was successfully connected, when I started Turbo Tax, there was a new update to download. After installing the update, I was able to efile my federal taxes.
