Error 70001 "Already Running Under Another Account"

Installed TT2024 Deluxe from download last week. Ran a preliminary return to prepare for filing today and now continually receiving Error 70001 "Already running under another account. Switch users and run TT from another account" when I attempt to reopen and file return today.  After reading volumes of posts on this error and calling TT support I am still unable to resolve after attempting/confirming the following in all combinations possible:

- Windows 11 up to date

- Open TT with Windows Defender & Anti-Virus turned off

- Open TT as administrator

- Run PC in safe mode and open TT

- Revert to previous Windows update and open TT

- Revert to  previous Windows update, uninstal and reinstall TT

- Deleted any previous version of TT

- Deleted TT download purchsed from Intuit via Amazon and reinstalled direct download from Intuit/TT.

- Confirmed all of the above with TT help over the phone.

- Earned neat badges for number of posts I've read

Open to more suggestions before going another route and fighting for refund.

This is a spontaneous connectivity issue that usually resolves itself if your connection to TurboTax remains intact while the process you are working on completes.

If the issue doesn't resolve on its own, close TurboTax, restart your computer, and reopen TurboTax.

If that does not solve your problem, consider some other things you can try:

  1. Reset your wireless access point and try logging in again
  2. Turn off your computer, your router, and your cable modem, in that order
  3. Wait a minute, then turn your modem back on
  4. Wait another minute, then turn your router back on
  5. Once your router is back up, turn your computer back on and try logging in again

Some users report being able to close the second account using Task Manager.

Another user reports:

Your Windows user name must exactly match the one you used previous years even if you have a new computer. Example: last year when you used TT you were "Jeff" but new computer lists you as "Jeff Smith" and TT will give you error code 70001. Create a new Windows user account with administrative privileges and use that when you log in to TT.

Here's how to Contact TurboTax Support for more help.

I had this situation recently. I believe I was at a step where TurboTax(TT) was trying to save my file and maybe go onto another step. I exited, then got the 70001 message when I tried to continue my taxes. I wish I had written the steps down, but hopefully I will communicate enough for some else to try the steps and confirm in better detail. But I believe I went into Task Manager and saw two processes that began with the text 'Intuit'. I highlighted each process and deleted. I believe one process may have referred to something like 'saving the file'. I then logged off, logged back in and did not get 70001 message again. As I mentioned before, one process might have had something to do with saving my return so I do not know if that step had completed and when you start TT again you get a file with all your most recent changes or will it start up with your return from the last time you saved it. I hope this helps, and my actions were better than just spinning my wheels. I will be interested if someone can confirm or could comment further,

I have the same issue. I had a windows update since I first installed TurboTax and completed my return. Since the windows update TurboTax gives the Error 70001. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling many times both as admin and not as admin. I have reset my router many times. I am not willing to rollback the Windows update. I called TT support and was issued a refund through Amazon. Still I have tried and tried though still 700001. I will have to switch to TaxCut. Though I have used TT for probably 20 years. Disappointing.

Have you check your Task Manager to see if you have multiple TurboTax processes running?

Tried many of the same things but I reached tech support. After a couple of hours we discovered that you may need to have Mircosoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64) installed. I only had the (x86) version and it failed with 70001. Once the (x64) version installed, BOOM, it worked.

This fixed it for me too -- I already had the x64 version but I did a "repair" on the installation and then Turbotax worked again.

Hi there. I don't know when you posted this but here is the solution i found. I saved my tax forms as a pdf and then i opened my adobe acrobat and printed from there. I never could figure out how to print from turbo tax. I have used tt for decades and it seems to be getting worse by the year.

i had tt from 2019 on and i deleted all of them. i restarted my computer twice with no success in printing from tt. I only have 2024 on there now. Save the files into the pdf, open adobe acrobat and print from there. this years tt sucks.

I agree.  I ended up using the HRBlock software.  It is obvious that TT has an issue and they haven't even tried to repair it.  I am so disappointed.  I have used them for years.  I was also issued a refund from Amazon TWICE because TT support told me if I get a new product key it would work.  It didn't.

Thanks for this! I spent over 3 hours on the phone with support today and they were unable to fix the problem.

This error may have been cuased when I installed Microsoft VS Code. I did install the redistributable as suggested. Eventually I could open my return. With some help form Turbox Tax support, I was able to efile my Federal return, and though I could not efile my state, I was able to pirnt and mail my state return.
