Entering data for Stock Sales

I have a 1099-B that has data for Box A, Box D and Box E.  Box A & D's cost basis are reported to the IRS by the brokerage firm and I have no adjustments to their numbers -- So I have input the relevant numbers in Summary form and they appear on Schedule D, Line1a (Box A) and Line 2a (Box D).

For Box E, the cost basis are not reported to the IRS and I need to input them.  There are only 3 sales for Box E and I would rather input them individually in TurboTax -- as oppose to mailing the Form 8949 separately.

How do I enter the individual sales?  Do I have to create a dummy account?

To enter your stock sales:

Open or continue your return.

Navigate to the 1099-B section:

  • TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to the 1099-B screen under Wages & Income.

  • TurboTax Desktop: Go to Federal Taxes >> Wages & Income >> If asked How do you want to enter…?, select I’ll choose what I work on. >> Under Investment Income, select Start or Update next to Stocks, Cryptocurrency, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other. >> If asked How do you want to enter…?, select I’ll choose what I work on. >> Under Investment Income, select Start or Update next to Stocks, Cryptocurrency, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other.

  • Follow the onscreen instructions. When you reach Let's import your tax info, choose how you want to enter your 1099-B:

  • To import your form, select your brokerage or financial institution from the list. Enter your sign-in credentials for your account, then select Get my form.

  • If you don’t want to import, select Enter a different way, and on the How do you want to add your investment docs? screen, you can upload a copy of your 1099-B.

  • If you want to enter your 1099-B manually, select Type it in myself.

  • On the following screens, answer the questions about your 1099-B. When you reach the Review your sales screen, the form you just entered should be listed.

As I mentioned in my original post, I have already started to enter the Box A and Box D information in Summary form.  So now, when I go to update, I get a list of my accounts -- including the one in the previous sentence.  I am no longer being asked whether I want to enter the information in summary or individual sales.  I can only "review" and add more Sales Totals   But now I want to enter the individual sales from that same 1099 (for Box E).

In short, how do I enter some sales in Summary (TOTALS) form, and some sales individually from the same 1099?

You need to make a separate entry for the additional investment sales and choose the enter individually option. You don't need to enter a federal ID number for the Form 1099-B entry, so it won't be an issue e-filing your return with matching federal ID numbers. The IRS won't care as long as your total sales and reported cost basis matches on your investment sale entries overall.
