eFile not working

I have 2024 TurboTax Premier desktop version installed on PCs running Windows 10 or 11. After I finished entering information and is ready to file, I click on the "FILE" button but the software is dead (not responding). I tried it on both Windows 10 and 11 and got the same result. Since the version I downloaded was released on Jan. 9 2025, I reinstalled it using a version released on Feb. 4 2025 but still does not work. Does anyone have the same issue?

I am going to suggest these steps below. I think you might be having an issue other users have experienced with installing when using Windows 10.

  1. Type "environment" in the windows search bar.
  2. This will bring up "Edit the System Environment Variables" as a match.
  3. Clicking on it takes you to the "Advanced" tab of a dialog box titled "System Properties."
  4. Near the bottom of the dialog box, click on the pushbutton labeled "Environment Variables...".
  5. This brings up a separate dialog box that shows the current values for user environment variables at the top and system variables at the bottom. In the list of user environment variables, you should see both TEMP and TMP, and their current values.
  6. Click on each, then click on the "Edit..." pushbutton.
  7. This brings up another dialog box in which you can change the "Variable value" to "C:\Temp" (be sure to change the variable value, not the variable name).
  8. This folder must, of course, exist for this step to work properly.
  9. OK out of all the dialog boxes and retry the install.
  10. Environment variable changes take effect immediately, so if this is the only change you make, it's not necessary to reboot.

Thank you, CatinaT1. I followed your suggestions and checked the variable value of TEMP and TMP. They were all correct. Since I have TurboTax 2021 to 2023 installed on my computer, I ended up uninstalled all of them, rebooted my computer and reinstalled TurboTax 2024. Still, the problem remains.

My TurboTax Premier 2024 is a free version from Fidelity Investments. I just wonder if this is actually the problem!!! I have not found any other user reporting the same issue.

Thank you, CatinaT1. I tried all of these but did not resolve the problem. Luckily, the free offer from Fidelity Investments comes with a TurboTax online. So I used that and successfully filed my tax.

I have been using TT for almost 20 years and never had a problem. I reinstalled my TT 2023 and 2022 and found they still run well. I still suspect if the free version is the problem. I will give TT 2025 one more shot next year. If TT 2025 would not work, I will move to a different tax software.

Just for the sake of trying I click on the "FILE" button this morning. Surprisingly, it works. I did not change any settings on my PC since this last time I tried it. I did not do anything to the software, either. Could Intuit do something on their end? This software confuses me!

Yes ... Turbotax updated when I opened it yesterday.   The efile button works now and I was able to file my taxes.   The update may have fixed the issue.
