Hi - I am having the exact same issue with TT Home and Business desktop version.  I've deleted history/cache/cookies, did a manual TT H&B software update, deleted Form 7206, saved the program, shut down, restarted, re-entered data to recreate Form 7206.   No success with any of this.    I'm still getting the same error.   Software says I have the latest updates.    Appreciate any help -  thanks!

With this same error problem, I am running Windows 11 and I do have Norton 360 security (which I have found sometimes to be a bug for other programs... but it never affected TT in the past).  Thanks.

The development team has been made aware of the e-filing rejection code that seems related to Form 7206.  They are working to resolve this and request that you use the link in the following TurboTax help article to register your email address for notifications.  The expectation is that this will be resolved in the March 29th program update.

Why is TurboTax adding an incomplete Form 7206 when I'm not required to file it?

Installed the software update released on 03/21/2024 for Mac version.

E-filed after the update. Got rejected by IRS with code R0000-058-01

TT states below:

---

An XML document that represents a binary attachment must have a valid reference to an attached

file.

Data in the return is missing or invalid and cannot be electronically filed at this time. If Form 7206(s) are in the return, review the form(s) for accuracy and errors. If the form(s) is attached in error delete it and resubmit the return for electronic filing. If necessary, make the appropriate change and re-submit this return electronically. However, if the reject continues, file this return via U.S. Mail, print this federal return and mail it to the appropriate IRS Service

---

Issue related to 7206 e-filing from Mac still persists as of 3/21/2024.

I have the same issue with the rejection of my federal and state returns for the same error message (

An XML document that represents a binary attachment

...) and contacted Intuit for assistance.  They said that the problem was probably most likely with my 1099NEC's having some unacceptable characters in the filers name [&,#, etc).  I went through my 1099NEC's and made a correction to one and double checked everything.  I refiled and was again rejected by the IRS and the state.  I do have a form 7206 in my return also (which I need) and think that this is now the problem.  It appear to be OK, but how do I know what's acceptable to the IRS.  Has anyone tried completely deleting their Sch C and 7206 and recreating them?  I don't know if this would recreate an acceptable Form 7206.

The development team has given us an update with regard to customers who are receiving the Reject Code R0000-058-01 when trying to electronically file your return.  The resolution to this situation is taking longer than expected and it may not be resolved before the tax filing deadline.

For reference, this information is from the IRS Instructions for Form 7206

Generally, you can use the worksheet in the Form 1040 instructions to figure your deduction. However, if any of the following apply, you must use Form 7206.

  • You had more than one source of income subject to self-employment tax.
  • You file Form 2555.
  • You are using amounts paid for qualified long-term care insurance to figure the deduction.

In order to proceed and get your return filed in a timely manner, please follow this advice:

1 - If you are required to include Form 7206 as a part of your tax return based on the information above, then you need to print and mail your return.  Electronic filing will not be an option if the reject code persists.

2 - If you are not required to include Form 7206 as part of your tax return, then you can attempt to delete the Form 7206 and try electronically filing your return once again.  If the form cannot be deleted or you still get the reject code, then you need to print and mail your return.

Use the steps in the following TurboTax help articles to delete Form 7206:

How do I view and delete forms in TurboTax Online?

How do I delete a tax form in TurboTax Desktop (Windows or Mac)?

I don't know if a link can be accessed in these community posts, but there has been folks who tried deleting both Sch C and 7206 and the redoing the interview and according to them you still get rejection.  You will also see from one of the TT employees @CatinaT1  she simply copies and pastes a standard answer that says, in summary,  TT has given up repairing the 7206 form problem and you must mail your return.    Someone else has said they have used both HRB and TT for 4 years and always came up a better return with TT... that doesn't make any sense, since only one entity determines how the math works on a tax return, and that’s the IRS. So unless there’s a programming error, you should get the same numerical “answer” no matter which tax software you use. But you still have to feed the software all of your information, and there are a million ways to do that.   I think if you are able to understand how data should be entered into the forms, then it doesn't matter what you use...and this year, you would have been better off with HRB unfortunately.....

I ditto the comments made just above..." tried deleting both Sch C and 7206 and the redoing the interview and according to them you still get rejection.."  I did the same and received the same results - 2 times and  2 more rejections.  I have a Sch C and form 7206 is required so unless I want to forgo the taxes saved by claiming the medical insurance on my Sch C and just include it on my itemized deductions, I'm at a loss as to what else to try.  My state was rejected also because the Fed wasn't accepted.  I'm going to give TT a couple more days to work on issue before the filing deadline.  Maybe a miracle will happen.

a user in one of the other threads regarding this figured out that they had multiple form 7206 when viewing the forms in 'form view' - I deleted the extras as was suggested and my return was accepted !

Workaround that worked for me —-reply to njginn:  thanks for your post about the  GHOST 7206 forms.  I have to file both a schedule C and schedule F. I had the exact same scenario and did not see any 7206 form anywhere on the left side of the screen except one under my Sch C.  However, when I searched for form 7206 with the open form icon, it showed 4 possible locations for the form 7206 including a schedule F (which I have to file) and two schedule K1’s. Don’t assume they are empty.  The one under my Sch F was not. Delete it. I then clicked on each of them and made sure they were all deleted except the one with my Sch C which I kept. I saved my return, reopened it, and re-filed (5th time also) and it was finally accepted both for federal and state.  This workaround worked for me and hopefully it will help someone else as well.
