e-filing PIN ?

TT is asking for an e-filing pin for me and my spouse.
I never e-filed with TT before...

I see I can make one up - why do both of us need one?

Also what is the purpose if any pin can be chosen at this point?

There are 2 different types of PINs in question here.  You may be referring to the 5 Digit Pin section (also known as the signature ID) instead of in the IP PIN area which is for the 6 digit IRS issued number.

Please see how do I add or remove my 6-digit IP PIN for steps to enter your IRS issued number.  This number is issued each year so make sure you are using the correct number for 2024.

Yes, you can simple make up a PIN (for yourself and your spouse).
An e-filing PIN, or Personal Identification Number, is used to electronically sign your tax return when filing online. It helps verify your identity and ensures the security of your tax information during the e-filing process.

Thanks.

Yes, after reading thru all the posts I realized there are 2 different PINS- one used by TT during e-filing and 1 used by the IRS for identify protection.
